The effect of different exercise programs on sarcopenia criteria in older people: A systematic review of systematic reviews with meta-analysis

Luis Fernando Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different modalities of physical exercises on the sarcopenia diagnostic criteria in older people. The results showed that resistance training had positive effects on strength and skeletal muscle mass, while mixed modalities of exercise had positive effects on physical performance. However, there were methodological limitations in the included studies, and more research is needed to confirm the findings.

Pathogenesis of sarcopenia and the relationship with fat mass: descriptive review

Chun-wei Li et al.

Summary: Age-associated obesity and muscle atrophy are closely linked and regulated by adipose tissue and skeletal muscle dysfunction. Adipose inflammation leads to fat redistribution and fatty infiltrations in muscles, causing decreased strength and functionality. Lipid accumulation induces mitochondrial dysfunction, increased production of reactive oxygen species, leading to lipotoxicity and insulin resistance. Muscle-secreted cytokines may exacerbate adipose tissue atrophy and chronic inflammation, establishing a vicious cycle of local hyperlipidaemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation, promoting the development of sarcopenic obesity.

The anti-inflammatory effects of a Mediterranean diet: a review

Catherine Itsiopoulos et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean diet is widely recognized to have protective effects against chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. This dietary pattern has anti-inflammatory potential, beneficially modulates gut microbiota, and immune system, and may be effective against COVID-19. However, barriers such as lack of training, patient materials, and concerns about patient adherence prevent clinicians from routinely recommending the Mediterranean diet.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), a Mediterranean Diet Component, in the Management of Muscle Mass and Function Preservation

Sara Salucci et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia, the progressive decline in skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function due to aging, can be treated through physical therapy and potentially dietary supplementation with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. However, further research is needed to understand the molecular mechanisms and potential benefits of EVOO in attenuating muscle wasting.

Evelien Gielen et al.

Summary: This umbrella review provides an evidence-based overview of nutritional interventions targeting sarcopenia in individuals aged 65 years and older. Leucine is recommended to have a significant effect on muscle mass in elderly people with sarcopenia. Protein supplementation on top of resistance training is also recommended to increase muscle mass and strength, especially for obese individuals and when done for a duration of at least 24 weeks.

Summary: This systematic review updated the evidence on the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and cancer mortality, site-specific cancer risk in the general population, all-cause mortality and cancer recurrence among cancer survivors. The analysis included 117 studies with 3,202,496 participants, showing an inverse association between highest adherence to MedDiet and various cancer risks, while moderate certainty of evidence was found for some outcomes.

Summary: The level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet is lower among the Maltese population compared to other Mediterranean islands.
