Vitamin C Status of US Adults Assessed as Part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Remained Unchanged between 2003-2006 and 2017-2018

Carissa D. Powers et al.

Summary: This study compared serum vitamin C (VIC) levels in the US adult population in the NHANES 2017-2018 survey with data from 2003-2004 and 2005-2006. The study found that VIC levels were higher in individuals aged 60 or above, lower in men compared to women, lower in low-income individuals, lower in obese individuals, and lower in smokers. There were differences in VIC levels among different race/Hispanic origin groups. The overall VIC status of the US adult population has remained stable since the last assessment in 2005-2006, but vitamin C deficiency still persists in those with low dietary intake and who smoke.

Discrepancies in global vitamin C recommendations: a review of RDA criteria and underlying health perspectives

Anitra C. Carr et al.

Summary: There are significant discrepancies in global recommendations for daily vitamin C intake, with factors such as gender, age, pregnancy, lactation, and smoking being debated among regulatory authorities. Despite the looming global obesity pandemic, body weight as a significant predictor of vitamin C status and requirement has not been considered in dietary recommendations.

Insufficient Vitamin C Levels among Adults in the United States: Results from the NHANES Surveys, 2003-2006

Jennifer Crook et al.

Summary: The study found that 41.8% of the population had insufficient levels of Vitamin C, with factors such as being male, aged 20-59, Black and Mexican American, smokers, increased BMI, middle to high poverty to income ratio, and food insecurity being significantly associated with insufficient Vitamin C plasma levels. Plasma Vitamin C levels indicate a large portion of the population is still at risk for inflammatory-driven diseases without symptoms of Vitamin C deficiency.

Neutrophils Isolated from Septic Patients Exhibit Elevated Uptake of Vitamin C and Normal Intracellular Concentrations despite a Low Vitamin C Milieu

Anitra C. Carr et al.

Summary: Despite septic patients having significantly lower plasma ascorbate status, the intracellular ascorbate content in neutrophils from septic patients is comparable to that of healthy controls, while erythrocytes show lower content. The mechanisms behind this remain uncertain, potentially involving increased generation of dehydroascorbic acid.

Vitamin C Intervention for Critical COVID-19: A Pragmatic Review of the Current Level of Evidence

Patrick Holford et al.

Summary: Vitamin C supplementation appears beneficial for patients with severe respiratory infections, especially COVID-19 patients, as clinical trials have shown improvements in disease severity, reduced mortality, and potential benefits in oxygenation and inflammatory markers in more severe cases. High doses of oral vitamin C supplementation may also improve recovery rate in mild cases.
