Validity and Reproducibility of Malaysian Food Frequency Questionnaire for Dietary Intake Related to Colorectal Cancer

Ainaa Almardhiyah Abd Rashid et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity and reproducibility of a 142-food item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) for assessing dietary factors related to colorectal cancer among Malaysians. The results showed that the FFQ provided higher estimates of nutrient and food group intake compared to the 3-day food record method. The correlation between FFQ and food record method was moderate. Overall, the FFQ was found to be a valid tool for assessing dietary intake among Malaysians.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Chronic intestinal inflammation drives colorectal tumor formation triggered by dietary heme iron in vivo

Nina Seiwert et al.

Summary: Intake of heme iron leads to persistent dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota, chronic gut inflammation, and increased colorectal tumorigenesis. Intestinal inflammation plays a crucial role in heme iron-associated colorectal carcinogenesis.

Incidence and clinicopathological features of colorectal cancer among multi-ethnic patients in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: a hospital-based retrospective analysis over two decades

Khairul Najmi Muhammad Nawawi et al.

Summary: The study revealed a continuous increase in the incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in Malaysia from 1997 to 2017, particularly showing a growing trend in the age groups of 40-49 years, with Malays experiencing a more significant rise in incidence rates. The majority of patients were diagnosed at a later stage, and the cancer was commonly localized in the rectal region.

Association of Body Mass Index With Risk of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Hengjing Li et al.

Summary: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in young adults has been increasing in recent decades, potentially due to rising rates of overweight and obesity. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that obesity is a strong risk factor for early-onset CRC, with higher risks associated with higher BMI categories. Efforts to address obesity in adolescents and young adults may be crucial in reducing CRC incidence in future generations.

A case-control study in France showing that a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with a higher risk of breast cancer

Mariem Hajji-Louati et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between dietary inflammatory potential and breast cancer risk, finding that a pro-inflammatory diet may increase the risk of breast cancer, especially in post-menopausal women and smokers. The results suggest that the effect of diet on breast cancer risk may vary by tumor subtype.
