Midlife Cardiovascular Health and Robust Versus Frail Late-Life Status: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study

Priya Palta et al.

Summary: This study found a strong positive relationship between midlife cardiovascular health and late-life robustness, which applies to both men and women. Additionally, survivorship bias partially explains the sex differences in robustness across different LS7 levels.

Gender differences in frailty transition and its prediction in community-dwelling old adults

Nina Mielke et al.

Summary: This study investigates gender differences in frailty transition in older adults and develops gender-stratified prognostic prediction models. The results show that there are disparities in frailty transition rates, patterns, and predictors between men and women. Considering gender is crucial when addressing frailty and targeting interventions in old age.

Frailty in individuals with depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders: longitudinal analyses of all-cause mortality

Julian Mutz et al.

Summary: This study found elevated levels of frailty in individuals with three common mental disorders. Frailty and mental disorders represent modifiable targets for prevention and treatment, and improving population health and life expectancy, especially when both conditions coexist.

Frailty and risks of all-cause and cause-specific death in community-dwelling adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Yang Peng et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis explored the associations of frailty with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. The findings revealed that frailty was significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and was a strong predictor of cause-specific mortality from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory illness in community-dwelling adults. Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between frailty and cause-specific mortality from dementia, infection, and COVID-19.

Social isolation and loneliness as related to progression and reversion of frailty in the Survey of Health Aging Retirement in Europe (SHARE)

Carlotta Micaela Jarach et al.

Summary: This study utilized longitudinal data to analyze the association between frailty and psychosocial risk factors. The findings suggest that loneliness and social isolation contribute to transitions towards frailty and pre-frailty, emphasizing the importance of addressing levels of loneliness and social isolation. The study results indicate that even in the absence of other health conditions, average levels of loneliness and social isolation should be actively managed.

Frailty and comorbidity in predicting community COVID-19 mortality in the UK Biobank: The effect of sampling

Jonathan K. L. Mak et al.

Summary: Frailty and comorbidity measures were found to be associated with COVID-19 mortality risk in a U.K. Biobank cohort study. Concurrent HFRS and CCI were shown to have stronger predictive abilities for COVID-19 mortality, but limited added value in COVID-19 inpatients.

Midlife vascular risk factors and risk of incident dementia: Longitudinal cohort and Mendelian randomization analyses in the UK Biobank

Rainer Malik et al.

Summary: Midlife adherence to the biological metrics of Life's Simple 7 (LS7) is associated with lower risk of dementia, while there is no association between the composite LS7 score and lifestyle subscore with incident dementia. Genetically elevated blood pressure is associated with higher risk of dementia. These findings highlight the importance of midlife blood pressure control in mitigating dementia risk.

Friendship-related social isolation is a potential risk factor for the transition from robust to prefrailty among healthy older adults: a 1-year follow-up study

Chiharu Uno et al.

Summary: This study found that only friendship-related social isolation was associated with prefrailty among healthy Japanese older adults. At 1-year follow-up, a quarter of the participants developed prefrailty, with friendship-related social isolation increasing the risk of transitioning from robust to prefrail.
