Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Vs Sleeve Gastrectomy in Super Obesity: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: Through meta-analysis, it was found that laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) can achieve better short-term weight control and a higher resolution rate of dyslipidemia within 12 months in superobese patients. In contrast, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has slightly inferior results compared to LRYGB.

COVID-19 Mortality in Europe, by Latitude and Obesity Status: A Geo-Spatial Analysis in 40 Countries

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between latitude and obesity prevalence in European populations and the spread and severity of COVID-19. The analysis showed that countries with higher latitudes had higher COVID-19 incidence and fatality rates during the whole period and from 1 November 2020 to 31 March 2021. Higher incidence and fatality rates were also observed in areas with a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity during the whole period, while only incidence rates increased during the period from 1 November 2020 to 31 March 2021.

Long-Term Outcomes of Laparoscopic Gastric Plication for Treatment of Morbid Obesity: a Single-Center Experience

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term consequences of laparoscopic gastric plication (LGP) in obese patients. The results showed a significant reduction in BMI at 2 years, but a plateau at 3 and 4 years, with a significant BMI increase at 6 years. Weight regain was observed in 35 patients at the 6-year mark, resulting in a high rate of revisions. Predictors for weight regain included disrupted plication fold, increased hunger, and non-adherence to regular exercise.

Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Versus Sleeve Gastrectomy Plus Procedures for Treatment of Morbid Obesity: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: In this meta-analysis, it was found that the SADI-S procedure achieved a significantly greater percentage of excess weight loss than RYGB, while SG + DJB and SADJB also resulted in greater weight loss than RYGB. Major complications were fewer with SG + JJB compared to RYGB, but the difference was not significant. Overall, SG plus procedures appear to achieve better weight loss and cause fewer complications than RYGB.
