Low linoleic acid foods with added DHA given to Malawian children with severe acute malnutrition improve cognition: a randomized, triple-blinded, controlled clinical trial

Kevin Stephenson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different compositions of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) on the cognitive ability of children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The results showed that treatment with RUTF containing added DHA (DHA-HO-RUTF) improved the cognitive ability of children even after 6 months of completing the treatment. This treatment should be further explored in clinical settings.

Development of prefrontal cortex

Sharon M. Kolk et al.

Summary: The development of the prefrontal cortex in humans is a complex process, involving the generation, differentiation, and synaptic connection formation of neurons extending into the third decade of life. Neurotransmitter systems and neuronal migration play important roles in this process, with genetic or environmental factors potentially impacting these processes and leading to cognitive impairment.

Epigenetics of pregnancy: looking beyond the DNA code

Daniela Zuccarello et al.

Summary: This narrative review summarizes the current knowledge on the role of epigenetics in pregnancy, including the most studied mechanisms and new frontiers. It also discusses the effects of environmental factors on fetal development. Understanding epigenetic regulation in pregnancy is important for better management of pregnancies and reproductive treatments, as well as for comprehending the origin of multifactorial disorders.

Summary: Underweight, stunting, and overweight/obesity have significant impacts on the cognitive neurodevelopment of children. Factors such as dietary nutrition, family environment, sanitation levels, parental job security, and access to adequate nutrients are important in modifying the impact of undernutrition and overweight/obesity on cognitive and neurodevelopment in children.

The review of alpha-linolenic acid: Sources, metabolism, and pharmacology

Qianghua Yuan et al.

Summary: Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential fatty acid that can only be ingested from food and converted into other beneficial compounds in the body. Studies have shown that ALA has various pharmacological effects, with its anti-metabolic syndrome properties being the most prominent. However, further high quality research is needed to firmly establish the clinical efficacy of ALA in treating various diseases.

Association of serum PUFA and linear growth over 12 months among 6-10 years old Ugandan children with or without HIV

Ruth A. Pobee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the relationship between PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) and linear growth in children aged 6-10 years. The results showed that low levels of SFA (saturated fatty acids), Mead acid, total n-9, and the triene-to-tetraene ratio predicted better growth over 12 months. On the other hand, low levels of LA (linoleic acid) and total PUFA (the sum of total n-3, total n-6, and Mead acid) predicted growth deficits over the 12-month follow-up, regardless of HIV status.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of n-3 LCPUFA supplementation on self-regulation and executive functioning in typically developing preschool-aged children, showing no significant improvements in these areas. Further research is needed to target children with sub-optimal self-regulation who may benefit most from n-3 LCPUFA supplementation.

Associations of Omega-3 fatty acids with brain morphology and volume in cognitively healthy older adults: A narrative review

Tony Macaron et al.

Summary: The association between omega-3 intake and brain volume, specifically the hippocampus, total grey matter, total brain volume, and white matter lesion volume, was observed in several studies. However, mixed findings were reported and the association appeared to be brain region-dependent. More research is needed to formulate specific recommendations for omega-3 intake to support brain health.

Dietary n-3 PUFA Deficiency Increases Vulnerability to Scopolamine-Induced Cognitive Impairment in Male C57BL/6 Mice

Dan-Dan Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that dietary n-3 PUFA deficiency decreases brain DHA concentrations and increases vulnerability to scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in C57BL/6 male mice. Rats deficient in n-3 PUFA show poorer spatial learning and memory, more obvious cholinergic dysfunction, oxidative stress, apoptosis, neuroinflammation, and neurodevelopmental delay compared to their saline-treated controls.

Summary: Polyunsaturated fatty acids, specifically Omega-3 and Omega-6, play crucial roles in human health, with an imbalance in their intake ratio potentially leading to inflammations and vascular constriction. Summary: This paper provides an overview of the metabolism, sources, dietary recommendations, and effects of long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) in cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, depression, and premature birth risk. Expert recommendations suggest a daily intake of 500 mg of DHA and EPA for cardiovascular health, 200-300 mg/day for depression, and 600-800 mg/day of DHA during pregnancy to reduce premature birth risk.
