Cross-Sectional Association of Food Source with Food Insecurity, Dietary Diversity and Body Mass Index in Western Kenya

Elizabeth Olatunji et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between household food source and household food insecurity, individual dietary diversity, and individual body mass index in Western Kenya. The findings suggest that owning livestock and buying food from supermarkets are associated with lower household food insecurity, higher dietary diversity, and a higher likelihood of achieving minimum dietary diversity.

Understanding the Healthy Immigrant Effect in the Context of Mental Health Challenges: A Systematic Critical Review

Sarah Elshahat et al.

Summary: Research shows there is controversy over whether immigrants have a mental health advantage, but there is evidence of a decline in their mental health over time. Although the Healthy Immigrant Effect theory can help reveal mental health disparities, it alone cannot explain or improve these disparities.

Migrants' Narratives on Urban Governance: A Case from Kolkata, a City of the Global South

Anuradha Chakrabarti et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the impact of urban governance on the lives of disenfranchised migrants using a case study of Nonadanga in Kolkata, India. It finds that migrants live in a condition the paper calls "partial rights," which is influenced by the dynamics between urban governance structure and migrants' agency. Through analysis of past development trends, the paper outlines potential future scenarios for migrants' living conditions and their implications for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 11 for inclusive cities by 2030.

Food price volatility and household food security: Evidence from Nigeria

Khadijat B. Amolegbe et al.

Summary: Food prices fluctuate seasonally, especially in areas with rain-fed agriculture and imperfect markets, and are also affected by macroeconomic and climatic shocks. Import rice price increases have negative effects on dietary diversity and food expenditure share, while the impacts of domestic rice price volatility are unclear. Wealth status plays a role in how food security indicators are affected, with imported rice price increases impacting poor households more on food share and rich households more on dietary diversity. Improving food security involves mitigating the impacts of global shocks on imported food prices.

Does Retail Food Diversity in Urban Food Environments Influence Consumer Diets?

Christine G. Kiria Chege et al.

Summary: The food environment significantly influences consumer diets, particularly in poor urban settings where unhealthy, highly-processed foods are predominant. Supermarkets have the highest market-level diversity scores (MLDS), yet do not significantly impact the diets of resource-poor households. On the other hand, high MLDS among informal retail outlets is positively associated with diet quality, while open-air markets show a negative association. Promoting diversification of nutritious foods in traditional retail outlets and improving accessibility can enhance the nutritional status of urban-poor consumers.

Migration, Rural-Urban Connectivity, and Food Remittances in Kenya

Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango et al.

Summary: Drawing on a city-wide household food security survey of Nairobi in 2017, this paper examines the importance of food remitting to households in contemporary Nairobi. Over 50% of surveyed households in the city had received food remittances in the previous year, with multivariate logistic regression used to identify the relationship between Nairobi household characteristics and the probability of receiving food remittances. The findings suggest exceptions to the standard migration and poverty-driven explanatory model of rural-urban food remitting, emphasizing the need for greater attention to other motivations for maintaining rural-urban connectivity in Africa.
