Soybean (Glycine max) isoflavone conjugate hydrolysing β-glucosidase (GmICHG): a promising candidate for soy isoflavone bioavailability enhancement

Sandeep Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of soy isoflavone conjugate hydrolysing beta-glucosidase (GmICHG) and its potential for enhancing the bioavailability of isoflavones. The GmICHG protein was found to be secreted and glycosylated, with activity in an acidic extracellular environment. The enzyme kinetics of GmICHG suggest that it has the ability to enhance the bioavailability of isoflavones by hydrolysing their beta-glycosidic bonds.

A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials of the Effects of Soy Intake on Inflammatory Markers in Postmenopausal Women

Joanna Bajerska et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found evidence that soy products significantly reduce CRP concentrations in postmenopausal women, but soy intake does not affect IL-6 or TNF-α. However, the mechanisms by which soy foods and their constituents affect inflammatory biomarkers still need further investigation.

Drosophila melanogaster as a Model Organism for Obesity and Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus by Applying High-Sugar and High-Fat Diets

Nieves Baenas et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of high-sugar diet (HSD) and high-fat diet (HFD) on metabolic dysfunctions related to obesity and type-2 diabetes in Drosophila melanogaster. The results showed significant differences in survival, glucose and triglyceride accumulation, and expression levels of Drosophila insulin-like peptides (dIlps) between the two diets, with gender and age playing a determinant role.

Phenotyping of Drosophila Melanogaster-A Nutritional Perspective

Virginia Eickelberg et al.

Summary: This article introduces the application of Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism in nutrition research, and provides a detailed description of the methods for phenotyping Drosophila. The practical application of fly phenotyping is demonstrated through a discussion of obese phenotypes in response to high-sugar diet and high-fat diet feeding. It is also found that the diets have impacts on the transcriptome and metabolome of Drosophila, which is important for understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Drosophila melanogaster diabetes models and its usage in the research of anti-diabetes management with traditional Chinese medicines

Yaodong Miao et al.

Summary: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing rapidly worldwide, but the underlying molecular mechanisms of disease development have not been elucidated, and the current popular anti-diabetic approaches still have non-negligible limitations. In this article, the Drosophila Diabetes model is introduced, which provides a convenient way to study the mechanisms underlying diabetes and to discover and evaluate new anti-diabetic compounds. The progress in the treatments and experimental studies of diabetes with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) based on the Drosophila Diabetes model is also reviewed, highlighting the undervalued values of TCMs in DM management.

What fuels the fly: Energy metabolism in Drosophila and its application to the study of obesity and diabetes

Nirmalya Chatterjee et al.

Summary: The organs and metabolic pathways involved in energy metabolism are comparable between humans and Drosophila melanogaster, making the fly a useful model system for studying energy homeostasis. Energy metabolism in flies is controlled by a variety of signals, similar to mammals. By studying genetic and diet-induced fly models of obesity and diabetes, we can better understand the molecular basis of these metabolic diseases.
