Conundrum for Psoriasis and Thyroid Involvement

Cristina-Ilinca Cira et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the strategies and genetic findings related to thyroid anomalies in patients with psoriasis. The results showed that psoriasis is associated with autoimmune thyroid diseases as well as immune-based side effects of anticancer drugs. The risk of thyroid dysfunction, especially hypothyroidism, is higher in patients with psoriasis. Female patients are more susceptible to these anomalies.

Very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) in patients with psoriasis and obesity: an update for dermatologists and nutritionists

Luigi Barrea et al.

Summary: Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin disease influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors. Nutrition and obesity are significant contributors to its pathogenesis and severity. Certain diets with anti-inflammatory properties, such as the very-low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD), may improve clinical severity by reducing weight and systemic inflammation.

Nutritional Therapy in Persons Suffering from Psoriasis

Jagoda Garbicz et al.

Summary: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with various factors contributing to its pathogenesis, including diet. Changing eating habits can improve patients' quality of life and reduce the risk of other diseases. Recommendations include low-energy diet for overweight individuals, limiting saturated fatty acids and replacing them with anti-inflammatory omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Antioxidants and vitamin D supplementation are important, along with alternative diets such as gluten-free, vegetarian, and Mediterranean diets that may have a positive effect. Tailoring the diet therapy to pharmacological treatment is also important.

Psoriasis and metabolic syndrome: implications for the management and treatment of psoriasis

J. J. Wu et al.

Summary: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that is often associated with comorbidities, particularly metabolic syndrome. The underlying pathophysiology of psoriasis and metabolic syndrome appears to involve genetic predispositions and inflammatory pathways. Biologic treatments for psoriasis may not only improve skin lesions but also reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases.

Association Between Psoriasis and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Among Outpatient US Adults

Zhijie Ruan et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown an association between psoriasis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in US inpatients, but the association is still unclear in the outpatient US population. This population-based cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to assess whether psoriasis is associated with NAFLD in outpatient US adults. The study found that psoriasis was associated with NAFLD in the outpatient US adult population, particularly among men, those aged 20 to 39 years, and those without diabetes.

The role of lifestyle and nutrition in psoriasis: Current status of knowledge and interventions

Maria L. Musumeci et al.

Summary: Extrinsic environmental factors, including patient lifestyle and diet, can affect the presentation and severity of psoriasis. Low-calorie, Mediterranean, and protein restricted/vegetarian diets may be beneficial. Psoriatic patients should engage in regular exercise, avoid alcohol, consume fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, as well as fruits and vegetables. Prebiotics and probiotics may have potential benefits, while vitamin D supplementation and gluten-free diet are useful in selected cases. Changes in diet and lifestyle should not replace conventional treatment but can be used as an adjunct.

Serum Lipids and Risk of Incident Psoriasis: A Prospective Cohort Study from the UK Biobank Study and Mendelian Randomization Analysis

Yi Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the causal relationship between serum lipid levels and the incidence of psoriasis using Cox proportional hazard model and Mendelian randomization analysis. The findings indicate that low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and high triglyceride levels are associated with an increased risk of developing psoriasis, particularly in women. The effects were more pronounced in younger and obese women. These results were further supported by Mendelian randomization analysis, suggesting a genetic link between HDL deficiency, high triglyceride levels, and incident psoriasis.

Epidemiology of Psoriasis and Comorbid Diseases: A Narrative Review

Jin Bu et al.

Summary: Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that affects not only the skin, but also other systems of the body and mental health. Recent studies have shown associations between psoriasis and various systemic diseases, including the skin system, reproductive system, and oral and ocular systems, as well as mental health diseases, due to a shared immune-inflammatory mechanism. This review summarizes epidemiological evidence from the past 5 years, supporting the association between psoriasis and important and/or newly reported systemic diseases, aiming to improve the management of people with psoriasis.

Investigation of the Relationship between the Disease Severity and Quality of Life of Psoriasis Patients and Their Anthropometric Measurements and Diets

Ali Timucin Atayoglu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between disease severity and quality of life in psoriasis patients, as well as their nutritional status. Results showed that psoriasis patients had lower energy intake and a negative correlation between daily vitamin E intake and disease severity. Abdominal obesity was also identified as a potential risk factor. Integrated healthcare involving dermatologists, family physicians, and dietitians is important for psoriasis management.
