Study on the Interaction between Four Typical Carotenoids and Human Gut Microflora Using an in Vitro Fermentation Model

Zhuqing Dai et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found a strong connection between carotenoids and gut microflora, but the relationship between their structure and activity is still not fully understood. This study used an in vitro fermentation model to investigate the interaction between four typical carotenoids and gut microflora. The results showed that carotenoid supplements significantly increased the production of short-chain fatty acids and influenced the composition of gut microflora.

Higher maternal plasma β-cryptoxanthin concentration is associated with better cognitive and motor development in offspring at 2 years of age

Jun S. Lai et al.

Summary: Current study found that higher maternal plasma carotenoids concentrations, especially beta-cryptoxanthin, were positively associated with early offspring cognitive and motor development at 2 years old, but not at 4.5 years old. Further investigations are needed to explore if the prenatal influences sustain beyond early childhood.

Dietary and plasma carotenoids are positively associated with alpha diversity in the fecal microbiota of pregnant women

Kristen M. Schmidt et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary carotenoid intake and gut microbiota composition in pregnant women. Results showed that plasma carotenoid concentrations were higher in women who recently consumed foods high in carotenoids. Microbiota alpha-diversity positively correlated with α-carotene and β-carotene. The differences in microbiota beta-diversity across reported intake of carotenoid containing foods and plasma concentrations of α-carotene may reflect an effect of high fiber or improved overall dietary quality rather than a specific effect of carotenoids.

Dietary carotenoids intake and depressive symptoms in US adults, NHANES 2015-2016

Song Lin et al.

Summary: This study suggests that increasing intake of beta-cryptoxanthin-rich foods may protect against depressive symptoms, as a significant inverse association was found between dietary beta-cryptoxanthin intake and depression prevalence. However, further prospective studies are needed before dietary recommendations can be made.
