Biodegradable Thermoplastic Starch/Polycaprolactone Blends with Co-Continuous Morphology Suitable for Local Release of Antibiotics

Veronika Gajdosova et al.

Summary: This study reports a reproducible preparation and characterization of highly homogeneous thermoplastic starch/pol(epsilon-caprolactone) blends with minimal thermomechanical degradation and co-continuous morphology. These blends are suitable for biomedical applications, specifically for the local release of antibiotics from the starch phase.

Efficient Physical Mixing of Small Amounts of Nanosilica Dispersion and Waterborne Polyurethane by Using Mild Stirring Conditions

Maria Echarri-Giacchi et al.

Summary: Good dispersion of nanosilica particles in waterborne polyurethane can be achieved by mild mechanical stirring when 0.1-0.5 wt.% nanosilica in aqueous dispersion is added. The addition of nanosilica improves the thermal stability and viscoelastic and mechanical properties of the waterborne polyurethane, but at the same time affects its wettability and adhesion, with higher content of nanosilica resulting in lower adhesion.

Self-Healing Epoxy and Reversible Diels-Alder Based Interpenetrating Networks

Beata Strachota et al.

Summary: Dual networks with thermoreversible Diels-Alder (DA) network and epoxy network are studied as self-healing thermoset materials, where interpenetrating networks (IPN) with a high content of DA network show a healing efficiency approaching 100%. Factors governing healing efficiency, such as the fraction of sol generated at healing, are determined and analyzed.

Macromechanical and micromechanical properties of polymers with reduced density of entanglements

Miroslav Slouf et al.

Summary: The study found that the entanglement density only affects the mechanical properties in the high-deformation region, with minimal impact in the low-deformation region. The stiffness of semicrystalline polymers increases with crystallinity, while the stiffness of amorphous polymers increases with glass transition temperature. Both macroscale and microscale stiffness-related properties showed similar trends, confirming the reliability of the results.

Comparison of macro-, micro- and nanomechanical properties of clinically-relevant UHMWPE formulations

Miroslav Slouf et al.

Summary: A set of eleven UHMWPE formulations used for total joint replacements were characterized, revealing linear correlations between crystallinity and stiffness-related properties at all length scales. Microindentation and nanoindentation at sufficiently high loading forces proved to be reliable methods for UHMWPE characterization.
