Electron-Beam-Induced Carbon Contamination in STEM-in-SEM: Quantification and Mitigation

Milena Hugenschmidt et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the carbon contamination induced by electron beam in scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the contamination thickness increases with the reduction of electron energy to about 1 keV, but decreases below 1 keV. Contamination also increases with beam current but saturates at high currents. Applying a given dose with a high dose rate reduces contamination. Plasma cleaning and beam showering are the most effective contamination-mitigation methods.

Corrosion of orthodontic brackets: qualitative and quantitative surface analysis

Romy A. Doomen et al.

Summary: This study used optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to determine and compare the surface characteristics and presence of corrosion in new and used brackets. The results showed that used brackets exhibited more signs of corrosion compared to new ones.

Nanotopography Evaluation of NiTi Alloy Exposed to Artificial Saliva and Different Mouthwashes

Zoran Bobic et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the influence of commercially available mouthwashes on NiTi orthodontic archwires and reveal the effects through non-electrochemical corrosion tests and quantification of nanotopography changes. The results show that fluoride-containing mouthwashes predominantly cause material loss, while chloride-containing mouthwash can cause both material loss and material gain.

Cytotoxic evaluation of two orthodontic silver solder materials on human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells and the effects of antioxidant and antiapoptotic reagents

Ghada Nimeri et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cytotoxicity effects of two different silver solder materials used for orthodontic appliances on human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells. Results showed both silver solders were cytotoxic, with Summit being more toxic than Leone. It was also found that oxidative stress and apoptosis were not involved in the mechanism of cytotoxicity.

Salivary pH Effect on Orthodontic Appliances: In Vitro Study of the SS/DLC System

Antonio Frois et al.

Summary: Stainless steels are commonly used alloys for orthodontic appliances due to their mechanical properties and biocompatibility, but corrosion in the oral environment can release metal ions. The study showed that salivary pH significantly influences corrosion behavior and proposed a new approach for oral corrosion prevention using DLC materials.

Monitoring Carbon in Electron and Ion Beam Deposition within FIB-SEM

Nicholas T. H. Farr et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Secondary Electron Hyperspectral Imaging can be used to monitor the changes in carbon in FIB-SEMs, especially the accumulation and bonding changes caused by electron/ion beam exposure. Additionally, Plasma FIB Xe exposure shows the capability to remove carbon contamination from the surface of a Ti6246 alloy without the need for chemical surface treatments.

A New Setup for Simulating the Corrosion Behavior of Orthodontic Wires

Polydefkis Papaioannou et al.

Summary: This study developed a new setup to evaluate commercially available orthodontic wires, testing metal alloy materials under extreme conditions to simulate their behavior in the mouth. The electrochemical testing and surface analysis revealed the corrosion behavior and ion release of the wires, providing valuable insights for dental material selection for patients with underlying health conditions.

Evaluation of Clinical, Biochemical and Microbiological Markers Related to Dental Caries

Maria D. Ferrer et al.

Summary: The study evaluated various markers related to dental caries in adults and found lactate in plaque to be associated with caries, while tooth-brushing frequency was related to levels of Streptococcus dentisani. Women showed better oral health parameters than men, and low pH and high lactate levels were associated with high caries rates. No association was found between bacteria levels and caries indices.
