Colloidal stability and degradability of silica nanoparticles in biological fluids: a review

Andressa da Cruz Schneid et al.

Summary: This review article provides an overview of the common and promising strategies for generating colloidally stable silica nanoparticles (NPs) in simulated biological fluids, and highlights the latest advances in producing degradable silica-based structures. The article emphasizes the potential of silica NPs as versatile nano-platforms for imaging and disease treatment, while acknowledging the challenges arising from their colloidal stability loss and possible aggregation and degradation in biological fluids. Strategies to overcome these challenges, such as surface functionalization and chemical modification, are discussed. The article underscores the importance of understanding the behavior of silica NPs in body fluids for the approval of nanomedicines and calls for further research on the dynamics, thermodynamics, biological response, and structural parameters of silica-based NPs.

Bisphosphonates: Synthesis, structures, properties, medical and industrial applications

Konstantin Popov et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of both medical and industrial applications of bisphosphonates (BPs), with a focus on their structure-property relationships. It covers the synthesis, crystallographic data, thermodynamics of complex formation in aqueous phase, and solubility data of BPs. The review discusses the major industrial applications of BPs, such as scale and corrosion inhibition and cation separations, as well as their numerous applications in medicine, including drugs for bone diseases, cancer treatment, drug carriers, and contrasting agents. It also highlights the importance of nanodrugs and nanomaterials based on BPs in both medical and industrial fields.

The Impact of Antiosteoporotic Drugs on Glucose Metabolism and Fracture Risk in Diabetes: Good or Bad News?

Athanasios D. Anastasilakis et al.

Summary: The study found that there is currently insufficient data to prove the significant impact of bone therapies on glucose metabolism in diabetic patients. It is uncertain whether antiosteoporotic drugs have different effects on fracture incidence between diabetic and nondiabetic patients. More research is needed to address these issues and provide stronger recommendations.

Calcium and Strontium Coordination Polymers as Controlled Delivery Systems of the Anti-Osteoporosis Drug Risedronate and the Augmenting Effect of Solubilizers

Maria Vassaki et al.

Summary: Bisphosphonates are a class of drugs used for treating calcium and bone-related disorders, with the ability to act as ligands to metal ions. In this study, the third generation BP drug risedronate was combined with alkaline earth metal ions to synthesize new materials, which can function as controlled drug delivery systems when exposed to specific conditions. The drug release efficiency of these systems was correlated with their structural features, with cationic additives used to enhance drug solubility at low pH levels.
