Excellent high temperature corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel immersed in purified NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic salts

Pengfei Lu et al.

Summary: The corrosion behaviors of 304 stainless steel (304SS) in NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic salts with purification treatment at high temperature were investigated through static immersion under Ar atmosphere. The weight loss of 304SS was measured as 1.61 mg/cm2 at 500 degrees C and 1.80 mg/cm2 at 600 degrees C. The annual corrosion rate of 304SS was found to be less than 100 μm, indicating excellent corrosion resistance at high temperature. The intergranular corrosion of 304SS at high temperature was accompanied by the dissolution of active chromium and iron. The corrosion of 304SS intensified with increasing temperature, especially above 600 degrees C, which provides valuable data for material selection at high temperature. Due to the compatibility of 304SS with NaCl-MgCl2 salt, it is suitable for use in high-temperature containers.

Corrosion behaviors and protective layer stabilization mechanism of 316 stainless steel in NaCl-KCl-NaF reciprocal salts at high temperatures

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Corrosion tests were conducted on 316 stainless steel (316SS) in NaCl-KCl-NaF reciprocal salts at different temperatures. The results showed perfect compatibility between the reciprocal salts and 316SS, even without special treatment, and a stable Cr-O enriched layer was observed. The mechanism of stabilization of chromium oxides in molten salts was investigated, revealing that low oxoacidity facilitated the formation of stable chromium oxides. These findings can potentially contribute to the design and corrosion control of molten salts.

Effect of excess Mg to control corrosion in molten MgCl2 and KCl eutectic salt mixture

Kasey Hanson et al.

Summary: The study suggests that adding an optimum level of excess Mg to molten salt can prevent corrosion of alloys like 316 H, without forming any detectable Ni-Mg intermetallic phases on Ni-rich alloy surfaces.

Corrosion behaviour of 316 stainless steel in NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 salt vapour at 700°C

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: The experiment investigated the corrosion behavior of 316 stainless steel in NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 salt vapor at 700 degrees C under static conditions. Easy-to-peel oxide layers were formed on the surface, with their composition and structure changing as exposure continued. The initially formed oxide monolayer gradually transformed into oxide multilayers, with the outermost layer changing from Cr-Fe oxide to Mg-Cr oxide, due to varying diffusion rates of elements and different reaction rates of MgCl2 in the salt vapor.

In-depth explorations on the microstructural, thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of MgCl2-KCl eutectic salt

Tingrui Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, first principle molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations coupled with experimental measurements were used to investigate the thermophysical parameters, microstructures, and thermal transport properties of the MgCl2-KCl eutectic salt. The phase transition behaviors and coordination structure changes were characterized through FPMD simulations and compared with experimental results. The study also revealed the characteristics of peak heights in the static structural factors and the dominating effect of Mg-Mg correlation on pre-peaks. The calculated thermal conductivity and shear viscosity of the molten eutectic were slightly lower than the experimental values based on ionic self-diffusion coefficients.

Thermodynamic and kinetic corrosion behavior of alloys in molten MgCl2-NaCl eutectic: FPMD simulations and electrochemical technologies

Xuejiao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermodynamic, kinetic, and microstructural characteristics of divalent alloying elements in molten salt were analyzed through simulations and experiments. The results revealed the corrosion rules and explained the phenomenon of corrosion. The oxidation reactions of Ti were found to be thermodynamically and kinetically favorable, while the reactions of Fe and Cr had advantages in either thermodynamics or kinetics. Additionally, the Ni enrichment on the alloy surface was explained by the larger diffusivity of Ni2+ in molten salt.

Corrosion behavior and mechanism of 316 stainless steel in NaCl-KCl-ZnCl2 molten salts at high temperature

Zhe Hu et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior and mechanism of 316SS alloy in NaCl-KCl-ZnCl2 molten salts were investigated. The annual corrosion rate initially increased and then decreased to a steady rate. No evident pitting and intergranular corrosion were observed. An oxide layer composed of various oxides formed on the surface of the 316SS samples. The corrosion mechanism involved the hygroscopicity of ZnCl2, the reactions with Fe and Cr, and the formation of nickel oxide. Removal of Zn(OH)2 or basic zinc chloride in NaCl-KCl-ZnCl2 is necessary for commercial application.

Taisen Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the corrosion behavior of nitrogen-containing low-nickel flux-cored wire and weld cladding in molten salt. The results demonstrate that the nitrogen-containing low-nickel weld cladding exhibits better corrosion resistance compared to conventional weld cladding. The addition of nitrogen reacts with corrosive impurities, improves the corrosion environment, and enhances the corrosion resistance.

Summary: This study investigates the corrosion behavior of additively manufactured materials, specifically stainless steel 316L (SS316L) and Ni-base superalloy Inconel 718 (IN718), when exposed to salt environments. The results show that LMD SS316L has inferior corrosion resistance, while both AM and conventionally processed IN718 samples exhibit two different types of corrosion morphologies.

The corrosion behavior of 304 stainless steel in NaNO3-NaCl-NaF molten salt and vapor

Xing Lai et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of 304 stainless steel in molten NaNO3-NaCl-NaF salt and vapor has been studied. The results showed the formation of surface oxides and shedding phenomenon, attributed to the existence of NO2 and NO in the vapor. The corrosion rate in the salt is similar to that in solar salt, indicating the insignificant influence of Cl- and F- on the steel. This study enriches the molten salt corrosion database and provides references for alloy and salt selection in CSP.
