Biodegradation of bioplastics under aerobic and anaerobic aqueous conditions: Kinetics, carbon fate and particle size effect

Octavio Garcia-Depraect et al.

Summary: This study compared the biodegradation of various bioplastics in different aerobic and anaerobic conditions, showing that particle size significantly affects the degradation rate. The increase in biomass accounted for a varying proportion of the total carbon, highlighting the importance of analyzing biodegradation kinetics and carbon fate in improving the development and testing of biodegradable materials.

PHB into PHB: Recycling of polyhydroxybutyrate by a tandem thermolytic distillation-microbial fermentation process

Chiara Samori et al.

Summary: The study proposes and assesses the recycling of PHB through depolymerization-polymerization for the first time. Effective depolymerization of PHB to crotonic acid via thermolytic distillation at mild conditions with low energy consumption confirms the technical feasibility of this tandem approach for producing renewed PHB. Preliminary evaluation indicates that the energy requirement for producing crotonic acid from PHB waste is comparable to obtaining fermentable sugars for feeding bacteria that accumulate PHB.

Production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from five commercial bioplastics via acidogenic fermentation

Octavio Garcia-Depraect et al.

Summary: The feasibility of producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from poly-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) through acidogenic fermentation was investigated. It was found that VFAs can be produced from PHB and PHBV, but not from PBS, PCL, and PLA. High concentration of PHA substrates resulted in organic overloading and accumulation of VFAs.

Enhancement of PHA Production by a Mixed Microbial Culture Using VFA Obtained from the Fermentation of Wastewater from Yeast Industry

Carolina Ospina-Betancourth et al.

Summary: This study successfully utilized wastewater from the yeast production industry to produce high-value PHA, achieving a high PHB accumulation rate and yield through a three-step microbial reactor setup. By steps like sequencing batch reactor operation, a maximum accumulation of 17% PHB based on cell dry weight was achieved with mainly PHA-producing bacterial species in the microbial community.

Inspired by nature: Microbial production, degradation and valorization of biodegradable bioplastics for life-cycle-engineered products

Octavio Garcia-Depraect et al.

Summary: Global environmental pollution from micro- and macro-plastics is a consequence of extensive use and improper waste management of conventional plastic products. Biobased and biodegradable plastics are emerging as alternatives, but the lack of advanced end-of-life technologies hinders circularity in the material economy.

Investigation of process parameters on the anaerobic digestion of a poly (hydroxyalkonate) film

Swati Hegde et al.

Summary: The study found that anaerobic digestion operating conditions have a significant impact on the degradation of PHA film, with maximal biomethane generation observed under mesophilic conditions. Adjusting the inoculum-to-substrate ratio and co-digesting with food waste can also improve BMP of PHA. These findings will help establish operating parameters for anaerobic digestion of PHA-containing feedstocks.
