Influence of magnetic field of a radial focusing external magnetically insulated diode on emission behavior of intense pulsed ion beam

Mofei Xu et al.

Summary: We investigated the effect of magnetic field in the A-C gap of a radial focusing external magnetically insulated diode on the emission behavior of IPIB. The non-uniform magnetic field distribution induced stronger ion emission at the outer ring area of the anode, leading to more serious depletion of the anode outer ring. The experimental results showed that the diode voltage and ion beam density increased with the increase of magnetic field.

Effect of AISI H13 Steel Substrate Nitriding on AlCrN, ZrN, TiSiN, and TiCrN Multilayer PVD Coatings Wear and Friction Behaviors at a Different Temperature Level

Dogus Ozkan et al.

Summary: Moving components of industrial machines and tools can experience wear and friction, especially at high temperatures, leading to reduced efficiency and lifespan. Applying surface coatings to the base materials can mitigate these issues. This study evaluated the effects of nitrided steel on the wear and friction behavior of AlCrN, TiSiN, CrTiN, and ZrN coatings applied to AISI H13 tool steel. The coatings were characterized in terms of mechanical, morphological, and chemical properties. Nitridation significantly improved the adhesion qualities of the coatings, enhancing their load-bearing capacity and high-temperature wear resistance. Wear tests showed that nitrided AISI H13 tool steel with AlCrN and ZrN coatings reduced wear rates by two to three times at 700 degrees C.

The structure and mechanical properties of Cr-based Cr-Ti alloy films

Gang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure and mechanical properties of Cr-Ti alloy films on the Cr-rich side. It was found that Ti alloying increased the hardness and reduced the modulus of the films. The wear resistance of the films was improved by Ti alloying. The first-principles method demonstrated that the reduced modulus was determined by the degree of Ti alloying. Comparison with other Cr-based alloy films or metallic glasses was made, suggesting that Ti alloying is a potential way to explore advanced mechanical properties of Cr-based alloy films.

Study of the propagation of an intense ion beam to the target

A. Stepanov et al.

Summary: The study showed that the intense ion beam with peak energy up to 330 keV can be focused during propagation in a stainless steel tube by neutralizing the space charge and reducing ion divergence. It was also found that the average energy density of the beam significantly increased in the focal plane, and the ion beam current density inside the tube noticeably rose.

Effect of Varying Plasma Powers on High-Temperature Applications of Plasma-Sprayed Al0.5CoCrFeNi2Ti0.5 Coatings

Sammy Kiplangat Rotich et al.

Summary: In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of atmospheric plasma-sprayed coatings of Al0.5CoCrFeNi2Ti0.5 prepared using gas-atomized powders at varying spray powers were investigated. It was found that the coatings sprayed at higher powers exhibited better mechanical properties due to their dense microstructures and fewer defects. Additionally, heat treatments increased the hardness and wear resistances of the coatings.

Study on the damage of Zr63.5Cu23Al9Fe4.5 amorphous and crystalline alloys irradiated by high intensity pulsed ion beam

Na Li et al.

Summary: Zr63.5Cu23Al9Fe4.5 amorphous and crystalline alloys were irradiated with high intensity pulsed ion beams to investigate the effects of transient high thermal load irradiation on their microstructure, surface reflectivity, and nano-hardness. The results showed that when the temperature did not reach the melting temperature of the alloys, there was no obvious change in the phase structure of both amorphous and crystalline alloys, and irradiation had little impact on surface reflectivity and nano-hardness. However, when the temperature exceeded the melting temperature, amorphous alloys maintained their amorphous structure, while crystalline alloys exhibited micrometer-sized amorphization, leading to a reduction in nano-hardness. Compared to molybdenum, a candidate material for the first mirror, the amorphous and crystalline alloys showed no surface cracks and minimal changes in surface reflectivity.

Comparison Study of PVD Coatings: TiN/AlTiN, TiN and TiAlSiN Used in Wood Machining

Beata Kucharska et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the possibilities of using PVD hard coatings to protect tools for wood machining. The results show that the TiN/AlTiN nanolayered coating has the best durability characteristics compared to TiN and TiAlSiN coatings. However, the performance of knives protected with TiN and TiAlSiN coatings did not show significant improvement compared to uncoated ones.

Study of phase transformation and surface microstructure of alumina ceramic under irradiation of intense pulsed ion beam

Shijian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of intense pulsed ion beam (IPIB) treatment on phase transformation and surface microstructure of alumina ceramics. It was found that IPIB treatment caused phase transformation from α-Al2O3 to β-Al2O3 in the irradiated area, resulting in the formation of a thick homogeneous modified layer and cracks inside the sample. Additionally, micro-holes were observed on the surface of samples with pulse number increasing, indicating the evolution of size and number of micro-holes with pulse number.
