Interaction investigation of three forest waste biochars and CaO in the process of Ca-L/CARBONOx

Jin-gang Li et al.

Summary: The Ca-L/CARBONOx technology has successfully achieved the simultaneous removal of CO2 and NO from coal-fired power plant flue gas. In this study, the characteristics of three forest waste biochars (elm biochar, fir biochar, and bamboo biochar) blended with CaO for simultaneous CO2/NO removal were compared. The results showed that the addition of biochar inhibited the collapse of CaO's pore structure and improved the NO removal efficiency by providing active adsorption sites. Among the three biochars, fir biochar exhibited the best NO removal performance and reaction selectivity.

Silicon (Si) modification of biochars from different Si-bearing precursors improves cadmium remediationAfrikaan

Linan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal efficiency of cadmium by rice husk and wood biochars modified with calcium silicate. The modified wood biochar significantly improved the removal efficiency, while the modified rice husk biochar showed a smaller increase. It is the first time to quantitatively verify the positive relationship between dissolved silicon and cadmium removal capacity. The study provides an important reference for understanding the role of silicon in biochar for improving cadmium remediation.

Extraction of iron (III) ions by core-shell microgel for in situ formation of iron nanoparticles to reduce harmful pollutants from water

Muhammad Arif

Summary: This paper introduces a new system suitable for simultaneous removal of metal ions and organic dyes. Silica microgels surrounded by poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-acrylic acid) were created using the free radical precipitation polymerization method. The system was used to extract iron (III) ions from water and was characterized using various techniques. The resulting iron nanoparticles loaded in the microgels were found to efficiently catalyze the reduction of organic pollutants and toxic transition metal ions.

Water quality and risk assessment of copper content in drinking water stored in copper container

Ravi Manne et al.

Summary: Access to safe drinking water is a serious challenge in developing countries. Copper, known for its antibacterial properties, has been used to store drinking water for centuries. This study evaluated the copper concentration in water stored in copper containers over different time periods and found that as time increased, so did the copper content, although it remained within safe limits.

Silicon-nanoparticles doped biochar is more effective than biochar for mitigation of arsenic and salinity stress in Quinoa: Insight to human health risk assessment

Hameed Alsamadany et al.

Summary: The contamination of soil with arsenic and salinity poses a threat to food security and human health. This study found that the addition of silicon-nanoparticles doped biochar (SBC) was more effective than plain biochar (BC) in alleviating the phytotoxicity caused by arsenic and salinity in quinoa. SBC improved plant growth, grain yield, and reduced oxidative stress and human health risks.

Ordered Mesoporous Silica Prepared in Different Solvent Conditions: Application for Cu(II) and Pb(II) Adsorption

Ana-Maria Putz et al.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis conditions of ordered mesoporous silica of MCM-41 type were varied to improve its morphology. The addition of 2-methoxyethanol as a co-solvent to ethanol resulted in an increase in pore wall thickness and a decrease in particle size. The materials exhibited well-ordered mesoporous structures at all synthesis conditions at room temperature. These materials with ordered porosity and high specific surfaces are suitable for applications as adsorbents in environmental remediation.
