Techno-economic assessment of low-carbon hydrogen export from Western Canada to Eastern Canada, the USA, the Asia-Pacific, and Europe

Ayodeji Okunlola et al.

Summary: This study assesses the cost of exporting hydrogen from Canada to the Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America. The findings show that the cost of delivering hydrogen to inland destinations in North America ranges from CAD$4.81/kg to CAD$6.03/kg, to the Asia-Pacific from CAD$6.65/kg to CAD$6.99/kg, and at least CAD$8.14/kg for exports to Europe. Blending hydrogen in existing natural gas pipelines reduces costs by 17%, and exporting ammonia to the Asia-Pacific saves 28% compared to shipping liquid hydrogen. These results provide valuable information for policymakers and the industry in international trade of low-carbon hydrogen.

The present condition and outlook for hydrogen-natural gas blending technology

Min Ju Chae et al.

Summary: The article proposes a method of using existing natural gas pipelines to transport mixed gas (hydrogen-natural gas) and studies the properties of the mixed gas, the durability of the pipeline, and gas loss from leakage. The survey results suggest that if the hydrogen concentration is below 20%, it does not significantly affect gas quality, safety, risk, materials, and network capacity. The article also presents suitable hydrogen supply methods for domestic use.

Injection of gaseous hydrogen into a natural gas pipeline

I. Eames et al.

Summary: The injection of pure hydrogen at a T-junction into a horizontal pipe carrying natural gas is computationally analysed to understand the influence of blending and pipe geometry on mixing. The results indicate that under-side injection promotes mixing while top-side injection leads to stratification with high hydrogen concentrations on the pipe surface.

Thin Film Composite Membranes Based on the Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity PIM-EA(Me2)-TB Blended with Matrimid®5218

Mariagiulia Longo et al.

Summary: In this study, thin film composite membranes were fabricated with a blend of polyimide and polymer of intrinsic microporosity. The effect of different polymer ratios on gas transport properties was analyzed, and the role of different commercial porous supports in membrane preparation was investigated. The results showed that a support with a small pore size favored the formation of a defect-free dense layer. The TFC membranes exhibited higher selectivity and a certain degree of permeance increase compared to the reference membrane.

Comparative performance of commercial polymeric membranes in the recovery of industrial hydrogen waste gas streams

Maria Yanez et al.

Summary: The application of membrane separation processes in industrial hydrogen-rich waste gases promotes efficient recovery of clean fuel. The study evaluates the performance of commercial polymeric membranes for hydrogen separation through experimental assessment, highlighting a trade-off between H2 recovery and product purity due to the dependency of H2 permeability on CO2 concentration.

Exploring the Potential Application of Matrimid(R) and ZIFs-Based Membranes for Hydrogen Recovery: A Review

Pablo Fernandez-Castro et al.

Summary: Hydrogen recovery is a key focus in government-promoted energy transition guidelines due to its potential as an energy resource and the demand for energetically nonintensive recovery methods. The use of polymeric membranes in selective gas separations, particularly Matrimid(R) as a polyimide, has shown promise for selectively recovering hydrogen with relatively good performance. Research is ongoing to develop enhanced features and membrane fabrication procedures to improve the effectiveness of hydrogen recovery.
