Shallow Seafloor Sediments: Density and Shear Wave Velocity

Marisol Salva Ramirez et al.

Summary: Near-surface seafloor properties have significant implications for offshore mining and infrastructure engineering. Shallow seafloor sediments exhibit low density, shear wave velocity, and shear stiffness due to the extremely low effective stress they experience. A comprehensive understanding of these sediments was developed by combining literature data with new laboratory and field results. The study investigated the self-compaction characteristics and developed a fork-type insertion probe to measure shear wave velocity profiles, providing valuable information for sediment preclassification and engineering design.

Utilization of coal gangue as coarse aggregates in structural concrete

Shan Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of coal gangue on the mechanical properties of concrete, proposing models and design methods for predicting the properties of coal gangue concrete. The results suggest that using coal gangue as coarse aggregates in concrete-filled steel tube is a preferable option, with higher steel strength and lower concrete strength recommended for structural stubs.

A state-of-the-art review of polymers used in soil stabilization

Jianxin Huang et al.

Summary: This paper provides a review of research on using polymers for soil stabilization in pavement and geotechnical engineering. It discusses the properties and mechanisms of various polymer classes, such as geopolymers, biopolymers, and synthetic organic polymers, impacting soil stabilization. The challenges for wider use of polymer stabilization, including limited evaluation standards, life-cycle cost considerations, and moisture susceptibility, are highlighted, along with recommendations for future research directions.

Experimental investigation on static and dynamic characteristics of granulated rubber-sand mixtures as a new railway subgrade filler

Yu Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigated the static and dynamic characteristics of granulated rubber-sand mixtures as a new type of subgrade filler in railway engineering. The results showed that the addition of granulated rubber improved the shear strength and liquefaction resistance of the mixtures. A new equation for estimating peak deviatoric stress and maximum shear modulus was proposed. It was concluded that a granulated rubber content of less than 20% can meet engineering requirements related to shear stiffness. The damping ratio was found to be correlated with granulated rubber content and confining pressure. Additionally, the relationship between the damping ratio and shear strain conforms to the equation proposed by Hardin and Drnevich.
