Distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals in soil following a large tire fire incident: A case study

Eva Raudonyte-Svirbutaviciene et al.

Summary: In October 2019, a fire broke out in a tire-recycling facility in Alytus, Lithuania, raising concerns about potential contamination of the surrounding environment. A study conducted on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals found high concentrations inside the fire zone, while significantly lower concentrations were detected in the surrounding soils. Areas with higher anthropogenic impact showed particularly high levels of pollution.

Effectiveness of selected issues related to used tyre management in Poland

Grzegorz Przydatek et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the interactions between the generation, collection, and recovery of used tyres in Poland, while considering the mass accumulation per area as an indicator. The study assesses the efficiency of used tyre management based on European Union and national regulations from 2008 to 2018. The findings reveal that over 5 million Mg of used tyres were introduced into the domestic market within 11 years, exceeding the required amount for registered vehicles. The recovery rate of all tyres was 47%, primarily correlated with the total volume. The growth trend for generated tyres was significant, and the accumulation of used tyres per area exhibited uneven distribution.

GTR/Thermoplastics Blends: How Do Interfacial Interactions Govern Processing and Physico-Mechanical Properties?

Mohammad Reza Saeb et al.

Summary: In this study, GTR/thermoplastics blends were prepared and the relationship between microstructure and processing-performance properties was investigated. The type of thermoplastic modifier had a significant impact on the processing behavior and microstructure of the blends with a high content of GTR. The GTR/thermoplastics ratio affected elongation at break, hardness, and density, while its effect on tensile strength was negligible.

Jan Kruzelak et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of glycerine content on the curing process and properties of rubber compounds. The results showed that glycerine had a strong plasticizing effect on rubber and caused changes in the shape of the curing isotherms. The application of glycerine improved the homogeneity and dispersion of lignosulfonate in the rubber compounds, leading to enhanced physical-mechanical properties of the vulcanizates.

Valentina Brunella et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on the thermo-mechanical devulcanization of post-industrial EPDM rubber using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The results showed that higher thermal profile and screw speed led to higher devulcanization percentage, and the screw profile composition also affected the efficiency of devulcanization.

Waste tire rubber devulcanization technologies: State-of-the-art, limitations and future perspectives

Paulina Wisniewska et al.

Summary: Waste tire management is a major global environmental issue, and finding low-cost and industrial-scale tire recycling methods is gaining more attention. The sustainable development of rubber devulcanization technologies and the appropriate design of cradle-to-cradle loops for rubber goods are considered promising strategies for achieving a higher level of rubber recycling. This work presents an overview of patented waste tire rubber devulcanization technologies and discusses their performance characteristics, environmental aspects, and limitations. The findings show that the reclaimed rubbers described in patents have higher tensile strength and elongation break compared to literature data or commercial products, with significant differences attributed to devulcanization efficiency and rubber treatment conditions. Considering environmental and economic aspects, reactive extrusion is identified as the most promising method for further developing rubber devulcanization technologies.

Summary: Consumer society generates a large amount of waste, such as tires. The emissions of pollutants from burning tires are influenced by the firebox temperature, but research on this relationship is limited. In this study, the concentrations of flue gases and solid pollutants from burned tires were investigated experimentally, and the relationship between the decomposition of CaCO3 filler and emitted pollutant concentrations was discovered.
