A new explicit solution for the mode I stress fields in notched orthotropic solids

Matteo Pastrello et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the stress distributions in orthotropic solids weakened by hyperbolic-shaped notches and loaded under in-plane tension. A new solution is derived through an optimization algorithm that can account for the geometrical features of the notch and the elastic material properties. The derived solution is compared with results from two-dimensional finite element analyses, demonstrating its high accuracy and improvements over the previous existing solution for the same problem.

A full field solution for an anisotropic elastic plate with a hole perturbed from an ellipse

Meng -Ling Hsieh et al.

Summary: In this study, a full-field solution for an infinite anisotropic plate containing a hole perturbed from an ellipse subjected to uniform loading at infinity is derived using Stroh formalism. Through perturbation technique and the method of analytical continuation, the unknown coefficients of the solution series are solved, resulting in an accurate explicit full-field solution up to the first order. Numerical examples are provided to verify the results against existing solutions and commercial finite element software ANSYS, concluding that the solutions presented in this paper are the first verified correct full-field analytical solutions published in the literature.

Open holes in composite laminates with finite dimensions: structural assessment by analytical methods

M. Nguyen-Hoang et al.

Summary: The paper presents a comprehensive stress and failure analysis framework based on analytical methods for evaluating the safety and lightweight design of open circular holes. The stress field for the finite-width open-hole problem with orthotropic material is derived using the complex potential method and validated against finite-element analyses. Failure analysis is conducted using the Theory of Critical Distances and Finite Fracture Mechanics, and the results are compared and validated against experimental data. The study also considers the size effect and investigates the influence of finite width on the effective failure load reduction.

Stress distributions in orthotropic solids with blunt notches under in-plane shear loadings

Matteo Pastrello et al.

Summary: The study presents new stress distribution equations considering the geometric characteristics of notches and material properties. It analyzes the stress distributions in orthotropic solids under in-plane shear for different geometries, and demonstrates the accuracy of the solutions through numerical analysis.

Stress analysis for an orthotropic elastic half plane with an oblique edge crack and stress intensity factors

Norio Hasebe

Summary: The main purposes of this paper are to analytically derive the general solution for an orthotropic elastic half plane with a crack or a notch, derive the Riemann-Hilbert equation as the analytical method, solve the problem using two methods, and derive general expressions of the stress intensity factor for a crack problem. It is confirmed that the stress functions obtained by the Riemann-Hilbert equation and Cauchy integral method are the same, and can be expressed by any elastic constants for calculating Mode I and II SIFs.

An analytical solution for the stress distribution around the cased borehole in the orthotropic formation

Hongwei Wang

Summary: A more efficient and accurate analytical approach based on a pure elastic cased borehole model was proposed to calculate stress distribution, which was validated and used to analyze the impact of mechanical properties changes on the cased borehole model. The derived approach showed a larger effect range of the cased borehole on formation compared to the borehole axis.
