Matrix transformation of lunar regolith and its use as a feedstock for additive manufacturing

Nicholas I. Cool et al.

Summary: Building a sustainable human habitat on the Moon requires advances in excavation, paving, and additive manufacturing to construct landing pads, surface transportation arteries, resilient shelters, and scientific outposts. Various methods have been proposed for consolidating lunar regolith into load-bearing structures, but each has challenges related to incomplete understanding of reaction chemistry, excessive thermal budgets, and lack of universal applicability. This study describes a versatile experimental and computational approach using siloxane networks to consolidate regolith into a feedstock suitable for lunar infrastructure construction.

Orbital debris removal using micropatterned dry adhesives: Review and recent advances

Mohamed Khalil Ben-Larbi et al.

Summary: Spaceflight is facing a sustainability problem due to the large number of non-functional man-made objects in Earth orbit. Active debris removal technologies have been proposed, but their complexity and cost have hindered their implementation. Micropatterned dry adhesives inspired by climbing animals offer a new approach for docking and capturing non-cooperative targets, which can potentially reduce complexity and mission cost. This article reviews recent developments in the use of micropatterned dry adhesives for space applications, specifically in active debris removal, and discusses open issues for future work.

Perspective on statistical effects in the adhesion of micropatterned surfaces

Jamie A. Booth et al.

Summary: Bioinspired micropatterned adhesives have been a focus of research interest in the past two decades. Recent experiments have shown that different interfacial defects lead to a distribution of adhesive strength within a fibrillar array. By establishing a statistical model, a better understanding of the performance of micropatterned adhesives and future research directions can be achieved.

Functional surface microstructures inspired by nature-From adhesion and wetting principles to sustainable new devices

Eduard Arzt et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the mechanisms of interaction between biological surface micro-patterns and liquids, solids, and soft matter, as well as the methods of using micro-pattern design to achieve wetting, self-cleaning, anti-fouling, adhesion, skin adherence, and sensing functions. Compared to traditional chemical strategies, micro-patterning methods offer superior resource efficiency and sustainability and can be applied in areas such as water resource management, robotics, and health monitoring devices.

Surface topography after deep rolling with milling kinematics

Berend Denkena et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of machining parameters on surface topography after deep rolling, and introduces a novel tool concept to explore the predictability of surface topography for milled specimens. By adjusting parameters gradually, the minimum pressure and lateral displacement conditions were identified to ensure accuracy in predicting surface topography.
