Thermal evaluation of a room coated by thin urethane nanocomposite layer coating for energy-saving efficiency in building applications

AliAkbar Azemati et al.

Summary: Thin-layer nanocomposite coatings are commonly used as insulation for building walls to reduce heat loss. These coatings prevent energy loss with high efficiency in low thicknesses. This study examines the effects of polyurethane nanocomposite coatings containing nano Al2O3 and nano ZrO2 on temperature distribution and heat transfer in a sample room. The results show that coatings with zirconium oxide have better thermal insulation performance compared to those with aluminum oxide, and the lowest temperature is observed in the nanocomposite containing 3% zirconium oxide. Numerical studies demonstrate that this thin-layer nanocomposite coating reduces energy consumption by 4% and 13% compared to pure polyurethane coatings and acrylic paints.

Functional Olive Pit Powders: The Role of the Bio-Based Filler in Reducing the Water Uptake Phenomena of the Waterborne Paint

Massimo Calovi et al.

Summary: Olive pit powders were added to a polyurethane-acrylate paint to investigate the impact of functionalization processes on filler hydrophobicity and the durability of the paint. Electron microscopy and colorimetric tests were used to analyze the morphology and appearance of the coatings. The resilience of the coating and the hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of the fillers were evaluated through various measurements, demonstrating that properly functionalized bio-based fillers can enhance the barrier performance and durability of waterborne paints.

Durability of Acrylic Cataphoretic Coatings Additivated with Colloidal Silver

Massimo Calovi et al.

Summary: In this work, colloidal silver was added into an acrylic clear cataphoretic bath to evaluate its effect on the durability of composite coatings. It was found that high concentrations of silver had a negative impact on the coatings, while small amounts of silver could provide specific aesthetic features and improve the protective performance.

Surface modified hollow glass microspheres-epoxy composites with enhanced thermal insulation and reduced dielectric constant

Zhengbiao Yu et al.

Summary: In this work, the interface binding strength between HGMs and the resin matrix in composites is improved by surface modification. As a result, the maximum filling ratio of HGMs in the epoxy resin reaches 35 wt. % (67 vol. %). The highly improved filling ratio benefits the HGMs-EP composites with improved thermal insulation and low thermal conductivity. Additionally, the composites filled with 67 vol. % HGMs also exhibit a significantly reduced permittivity, making them promising for 5G communication technology.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) ratio on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of polypropylene/hollow glass spheres (PP/HGS) composites. It was found that increased MAPP content enhanced the dynamic mechanical and thermal oxidative aging properties of PP/HGS composites without altering the crystal structure according to X-ray diffraction results.

Mitigating environmental impact of waste glass materials: review of the existing reclamation options and future outlook

Oludaisi Adekomaya et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of waste glass is a major challenge in sustainable waste management. Reclaiming recycled materials from waste glass remains a tedious task. Studies have shown ways to minimize the impact of waste glass by using them in building materials like cement, mortars, concretes, and blocks, while also discussing the durability and thermal insulating properties of recycled glass materials.

Summary: The study found that the addition of functionalized graphene oxide flakes and thermochromic pigments had a negative impact on the corrosion protection properties of the coatings, but improved its abrasion resistance. After chemical degradation and UV-B exposure, the aesthetic performance of the coatings was enhanced.
