Establishing a 3D aggregates database from X-ray CT scans of bulk concrete

Mingzhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a computational sequence to extract individual 3D concrete aggregates from computed tomography scans, establishing a database of 1442 aggregates with detailed information. Comparisons with existing reconstruction methods demonstrate that characterizing concrete composite with detailed information of each constituent can provide a more realistic representation of the composite. The vision of digital concrete with realistic aggregates input is further demonstrated through an example application.

Evaluation of Corrosion Damage in Sulfate-Attacked Concrete by CT, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Testing and AHP Methods

Dunwen Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents an evaluation method of corrosion damage for sulfate-attacked concrete using CT and ultrasonic velocity testing. The coarse aggregate information was extracted using CT, and the proportion of coarse aggregate in the ultrasonic test line was calculated. The degree of sulfate corrosion in the concrete structure was evaluated using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The results show that this evaluation method can accurately assess the corrosion damage in sulfate-attacked concrete structures.

Ultrasonic and X-CT measurement methods for concrete deterioration of segmental lining under wetting-drying cycles and sulfate attack

Dunwen Liu et al.

Summary: Accurately assessing the deterioration of segmental lining concrete under sulfate attack is crucial for tunnel construction and operation. This study used X-ray computed tomography (X-CT) scanning and ultrasonic testing to study the durability of concrete samples exposed to sulfate attack and wetting-drying test. The results indicate that the newly defined ultrasonic velocity after removing coarse aggregate and pores is a suitable index to describe the non-uniform deterioration behavior of sulfate-attacked concrete. A local deterioration assessment method for concrete structures based on X-CT, ultrasonic velocity, and sulfate attack model is proposed, which can be applied to the assessment of sulfate-attacked tunnel segmental lining based on laboratory accelerated tests.

Comprehensive Testing of Sulfate Erosion Damage of Concrete Structures and Analysis of Silane Coating Protection Effect

Dunwen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the protective performance of silane coating on in-service concrete structures in a sulfate environment. Concrete samples are collected and subjected to accelerated erosion with wetting-drying cycles to simulate the erosion process. The samples are divided into protected, exposed, and control groups, representing corrosive environments with silane protection, corrosive environments without protection, and general environments. Various methods, including ultrasonic velocimetry, CT scan imaging, NMR pore structure analysis, and strength testing, are used to analyze the characteristics of the specimens during sulfate erosion. The research quantitatively analyzes the protective effect of silane coating on concrete structures under sulfate attack and proposes an index for judging the damage rate of specimens. The results show that silane coating can reduce the damage of concrete structures in a sulfate-attack environment by more than 50%.
