Rethinking the divide: Exploring the interdependence between global and nested local markets

Malin Olofsson et al.

Summary: The debate on smallholder commodification trajectories is divided between mainstream approaches and alternative approaches, but this paper explores the interrelations and potential synergies between them. Using a case study in South Africa, it shows how smallholders pattern their markets based on their profiles and accumulation trajectories. Local markets are seen as hybrid spaces that can enable farmers to access global commodity markets, challenging the idea of nested markets as acts of resistance and the dichotomy between local and global markets. Instead, these markets can be interconnected and mutually supportive, allowing petty commodity producers to sustain their export-oriented production systems.
