Novel optical behaviors of metamaterial and polymer-based ternary photonic crystal with lossless and lossy features

Narendra Kumar et al.

Summary: In this simulation work, a ternary photonic crystal composed of polymer, metamaterial, and Silicon is analyzed using the simple transfer matrix method. The effects of incident angle, metamaterial thickness, and electromagnetic damping on the EM wave transmission are investigated. It is observed that at normal incidence, a wide photonic band gap (PBG) exists covering three different regions of the metamaterial. At oblique incidences, the gap splits into two components due to the existence of a splitting transmission line, and the transmission is significantly increased above 75 degrees incident angle. The splitting frequency exhibits a blue shift with increasing incident angle. The paper's insights have potential applications in fabricating metamaterial-based devices, split-ring resonators, sensors, microwave antennas, super-lenses, clocking, and switching devices.

Multiplication of photonic band gaps in one-dimensional photonic crystals by using hyperbolic metamaterial in IR range

Aliaa G. Mohamed et al.

Summary: In this study, the angle-dependent omnidirectional photonic bandgap (PBG) for TM polarization in a one-dimensional binary photonic crystal (1DPC) made of hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) was examined using the transfer matrix approach. The research revealed the existence of numerous PBGs in the infrared range (IR). By engineering the HMM layer with subwavelength dielectric-nanocomposite multilayers and adjusting the filling fraction of nanoparticles, the transmittance properties of the structure were improved. The effect of other parameters such as the permittivity of the host material and the thickness of the HMM layer on the PBGs was also investigated. This research could lead to better multi-channel filter photonic crystals with optimized optical parameters of the nanocomposite layer.

A redshifted photonic bandgap and wide-angle polarization selection in an all-hyperbolic-metamaterial one-dimensional photonic crystal

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: According to Bragg scattering theory, photonic bandgaps (PBGs) in one-dimensional (1D) all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs) are polarization-insensitive. In this study, we theoretically investigate the angle dependence of PBGs in a novel type of 1D PhC made entirely of all-hyperbolic-metamaterials (all-HMMs). The PBGs in all-HMM 1D PhCs exhibit a redshift property under transverse magnetic polarization and a blueshift property under transverse electric polarization as the incident angle increases. The polarization-sensitive property of PBGs enables wide-angle high-performance polarization selection, which can be useful in liquid crystal displays, quantum interferometers, and Q-switched lasers.

Numerical optimization of 1D superconductor photonic crystals pressure sensor for low temperatures applications

Walied Sabra et al.

Summary: This research calculates the reflectance spectra of a one-dimensional photonic crystal consisting of a high temperature superconductor Hg-1223 and a semiconductor GaAs using the transfer matrix method and the two-fluid model. The pressure effect is studied on two types of photonic crystals, and it is found that the defective photonic crystal shows a high pressure sensitivity while the periodic photonic crystal exhibits a small blue shift. By optimizing parameters, the highest pressure sensitivity for the defective photonic crystal is achieved.

Omnidirectional photonic band gaps in one-dimensional gradient refractive index photonic crystals considering linear and quadratic profiles

D. M. Calvo-Velasco et al.

Summary: In this study, the optical properties of 1D photonic structures constructed with bilayers of dielectric material and slabs with gradient refractive index (GRIN) profile were investigated using the transfer matrix formalism. The results showed that new photonic band gaps could be formed by varying the profile parameters, and the formation of omnidirectional photonic bandgaps was observed, with the bandwidth depending on the slope and curvature of the profile.

Detection of heavy metals using one-dimensional gyroidal photonic crystals for effective water treatment

T. A. Taha et al.

Summary: This study introduces a simple and efficient sensing tool based on one-dimensional photonic crystals for detecting various types of heavy metal ions. The inclusion of a defect layer in the designed photonic crystal results in the appearance of sharp resonant modes, with each resonant dip related to a specific concentration or type of heavy metal ion. The theoretical formulation is calculated and discussed based on the Drude model, gyroidal configuration, and transfer matrix method. The numerical results demonstrate the ability of the suggested sensor to distinguish between two important types of heavy metals, Cu2+ and Mg2+, with high sensitivity.

Textured concave anti-reflecting coating and convex back reflector to enhance the absorbance of amorphous Si solar cells

Summary: This work provides efficient designs for anti-reflective coating (ARC) and back reflector to enhance the absorption of amorphous silicon solar cells. The results show that the planar ARC can significantly increase the absorption rate, while concave and textured concave surfaces perform better with increasing angle of incidence. Convex surfaces are the optimal design for the back reflector at wavelengths greater than 550 nm. Textured concave ARC and convex back reflector are excellent solutions for enhancing cell absorption and optical generation.

Strong interaction between two photons and a plasmon of a complementary metamaterial in a terahertz dual cavity

Fanqi Meng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates strong coupling between the effective magnetic dipole moments of complementary split-slotring metamaterials and the magnetic field of a cavity radiation mode, with pronounced Rabi splitting indicating ultrastrong coupling. By exploiting the complementary characteristics of split-slotring resonators, a dual cavity with strong interaction among two photons and the plasmon in the cavity is realized, resulting in an increased generalized Rabi splitting compared to the single-cavity case involving only one photon and one plasmon.
