Temperature impacts the environmental suitability for malaria transmission by Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles stephensi

Oswaldo C. Villena et al.

Summary: Extrinsic environmental factors, especially temperature, play a crucial role in the spatiotemporal dynamics of insect vectors and the transmission of vector-borne diseases. This study focuses on the impact of temperature on the transmission of two malaria parasites by two mosquito vector species. The researchers developed a model to assess the nonlinear responses of temperature-dependent traits of both mosquitoes and parasites and incorporated these traits into a suitability metric for transmission. The results showed that the optimum temperature for transmission suitability was similar for the four mosquito-parasite combinations studied, but there were differences at the thermal limits. The model was consistent with observed prevalence of malaria in Africa and Asia, providing spatially explicit predictions for transmission risk.

Summary: This study conducted an economic analysis to estimate the return on investment (ROI) of scaling up four sets of cost-effective, WHO-recommended NCD interventions in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The results showed significant health and social benefits, with an ROI of US$4.9 for every US$1 invested.

Summary: Vector-borne parasitic infectious diseases, like malaria, are significant causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Africa bears the majority of malaria cases and deaths, while most Middle East countries are malaria-free but still experience imported cases.
