Independent effect of gestational weight gain and prepregnancy obesity on pregnancy outcomes among Saudi women: A sub-cohort analysis from Riyadh mother and baby cohort study (RAHMA)

Amel Fayed et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of prepregnancy obesity and gestational weight gain (GWG) on the health outcomes of both mothers and babies. The results showed that excessive GWG was associated with an increased risk of hypertensive events during pregnancy, while prepregnancy obesity was associated with more adverse outcomes including gestational diabetes, hypertensive events during pregnancy, and emergency caesarean section. Infants of obese women had higher odds of macrosomia and lower odds of low birth weight.

Prepregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain are associated with maternal and infant adverse outcomes in Chinese women with gestational diabetes

Qing-Xiang Zheng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the ranges of gestational weight gain (GWG) in Chinese women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and investigate the associations between prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), GWG, and maternal-infant adverse outcomes. The findings revealed that the ranges of GWG in Chinese women with GDM were different from the National Academy of Medicine's recommendation, and GDM women with high prepregnancy BMI and excessive GWG were associated with higher risks of adverse outcomes for both the mother and the infant.

Gestational weight gain and adverse pregnancy outcomes by pre-pregnancy BMI category in women with chronic hypertension: A cohort study

Sylvia E. Badon et al.

Summary: This study examined the associations of gestational weight gain with adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with chronic hypertension. Low gestational weight gain was associated with increased risk of preterm delivery and small-for-gestational age birthweight, while high gestational weight gain was associated with increased risk of preeclampsia and large-for-gestational age birthweight. In obese women, low gestational weight gain was found to decrease the risk of several adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Association of maternal pre-pregnancy low or increased body mass index with adverse pregnancy outcomes

Jie Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that in the Chinese population, maternal pre-pregnancy BMI was significantly associated with the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and this risk varied according to maternal age. Further research is needed to explore whether and how counseling and interventions for women with either low or high BMI before pregnancy can reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Summary: This study found an association between abnormal gestational weight gain and adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with gestational diabetes mellitus. Exceeding the IOM guidelines for total GWG was associated with adverse outcomes such as macrosomia, large for gestational age, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, while GWG below the guidelines was associated with an increased risk of preterm birth.
