The use of deep learning on endoscopic images to assess the response of rectal cancer after chemoradiation

Hester E. Haak et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of deep learning methods based on endoscopic images for assessing response in rectal cancer patients after neoadjuvant therapy. The results showed that the EfficientNet-B2 model had the highest diagnostic performance. While deep learning showed modest accuracy, further improvements are needed to assist endoscopists in evaluation.

Photoacoustic Tomography Detects Response and Resistance to Bevacizumab in Breast Cancer Mouse Models

Isabel Quiros-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that photoacoustic tomography may provide an early indication of response or resistance to antiangiogenic therapy, clearly distinguishing between control, responding, and resistant tumors within just a few weeks of treatment.

Predicting outcomes for locally advanced rectal cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiation with CT-based radiomics

Fuqiang Wang et al.

Summary: A feasibility study investigated the role of CT-based radiomics in predicting treatment response and survival rates in rectal cancer patients. By constructing NAR and survival models, radiomics features were found to be more accurate in predicting outcomes. CTV radiomics features were especially important in NAR prediction.

A clinical decision support system optimising adjuvant chemotherapy for colorectal cancers by integrating deep learning and pathological staging markers: a development and validation study

Andreas Kleppe et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a clinical decision support system based on DoMore-v1-CRC and pathological staging markers to facilitate individualized selection of adjuvant treatment. The system accurately stratifies the risk and identifies more stage II and III colorectal cancer patients with a similarly good prognosis as the low-risk group in current guidelines.

Using Multi-Scale Convolutional Neural Network Based on Multi-Instance Learning to Predict the Efficacy of Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy for Rectal Cancer

Dehai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a pathological images analysis method based on multi-instance learning to predict the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer. The method includes a gated attention normalization mechanism, a bilinear attention multi-scale feature fusion mechanism, and a weighted loss function. Experimental results demonstrate excellent predictive performance of the method on multiple datasets.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Assessing Rectal Cancer Treatment Response Using Coregistered Endorectal Photoacoustic and US Imaging Paired with Deep Learning

Xiandong Leng et al.

Summary: The study reported the development of an imaging system comprising an endorectal coregistered photoacoustic/US system and convolutional neural network for assessing rectal cancer treatment response. The PAM CNN model showed unique imaging markers in differentiating changes in tumor treatment response and demonstrated high diagnostic performance.
