Toggling Calcium Plating Activity and Reversibility through Modulation of Ca2+ Speciation in Borohydride-Based Electrolytes

Aaron M. Melemed et al.

Summary: Learning how to control the coordination and electroactivity of Ca2+ is crucial for developing next-generation battery electrolytes. This study investigates the modulation of the BH4-/Ca2+ ratio, a critical parameter proposed to govern electroactivity, by using an exemplar dual-salt electrolyte, Ca(BH4)(2) + Ca(TFSI)(2) in THF. The introduction of a more-dissociating source of Ca2+ promotes respeciation of Ca(BH4)(2), leading to an increase in charged species and plating currents. The significance of coordination-shell chemistry on plating activity is directly evident, highlighting the importance of understanding Ca2+ speciation in electrolyte engineering.

Efficacy of Stabilizing Calcium Battery Electrolytes through Salt-Directed Coordination Change

Nathan T. Hahn et al.

Summary: Achieving practical, high-energy-density calcium batteries requires controlling the stability of Ca2+ electrolytes during calcium metal cycling. In this work, the authors investigate the effectiveness of strongly coordinating Ca2+ cosalts in stabilizing TFSI-based electrolytes for calcium plating. The results indicate that the nature of the coordination interaction between Ca2+ and the cosalt anion is more important for determining stability than the population of TFSI- anions.

Investigation of alkali and alkaline earth solvation structures in tetraglyme solvent

L. H. B. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study compares molecular calculations using molecular and periodic codes to investigate the solvation structures of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions in tetraglyme solution. The two codes can produce equivalent structural and energetic information at the same level of theory, whether using an implicit solvation model or not. Molecular optimizations with periodic codes can be used directly for interface or electrochemistry calculations to preserve the solvent-solute interaction. The solvation spheres play a significant role in the stability and reactivity of solvated ions, providing essential information for constructing solvation structures in more complex electrolytes or performing electrochemical calculations.
