Potential-dependent C-C coupling mechanism and activity of C2 formation in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 on defective Cu(100) surfaces

Hong Liu et al.

Summary: The potential-dependent C-C coupling mechanism for C-2 formation in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 has been studied on several defective Cu(100) surfaces, revealing a nonmonotonic trend between effective free energy barriers and average coordination numbers. Further structural analysis indicates that Cu surface strain in parallel and vertical directions with respect to the C-C bond has distinct impacts on modulating the barriers.

Surface cavity effect on C2H4 formation from electrochemical reduction of CO2 as studied using Cu2O cubes

Guangwei Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface cavity effect on C2H4 formation was investigated using different types of Cu2O cubes. The results showed that the cavity cubes exhibited significantly enhanced selectivity for C2H4 and higher conversion of CO2 to C2H4 compared to the solid and broken cubes. Moreover, the role of surface cavity was attributed to the increased electrochemical surface area and porous feature, which resulted in higher CO formation and conversion to hydrocarbons and alcohols. The findings suggest that modifying the surface morphology of Cu2O-based catalysts can improve their catalytic selectivity for CO2RR.

Electrocatalytic CO2 conversion to C2 products: Catalysts design, market perspectives and techno-economic aspects

Estela Ruiz-Lopez et al.

Summary: The energy crisis and greenhouse gas emissions caused by the continuous growth in global energy demand have led to the urgent need to control and reduce atmospheric CO2 levels. Utilizing CO2 as a carbon pool to produce value-added products is a cornerstone of the circular economy. Among the strategies for CO2 utilization, electrochemical reduction of CO2 to produce fuels and chemicals is gaining popularity due to its versatility and flexibility in end products. While most studies have focused on C-1 products, targeting C-2 and C2+ compounds is more attractive from a chemical and economic perspective, but requires advanced catalytic materials. Despite the complex pathways for C2+ product formation, their various applications have driven the search for suitable electrocatalysts. This review comprehensively analyzes the progress made in C2+ products, considering catalyst design, electrochemistry features, and techno-economic aspects, to envision the most profitable scenarios. This analysis demonstrates that the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to C-2 products will play a key role in the decarbonization of the chemical industry, paving the way towards a low-carbon future.

Screening Surface Structure-Electrochemical Activity Relationshipsof Copper Electrodes under CO2Electroreduction Conditions

Oluwasegun J. Wahab et al.

Summary: Understanding how crystallographic orientation affects the electrocatalytic performance of metal catalysts is crucial for improving catalyst efficiency. This study combines scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to investigate the correlation between surface crystallographic orientations on polycrystalline copper (Cu) and activity under CO2 electroreduction conditions. The results show that the order of activity is (111) < (100) < (110) among the Cu primary orientations. Furthermore, the study reveals that the ease of electrochemical stripping of the naturally formed passive layer on Cu is grain-dependent, with low-index facets being easier to strip. This research provides a method to rank the most active surfaces for further study.

Probing the Dynamics of Low-Overpotential CO2-to-CO Activation on Copper Electrodes with Time-Resolved Raman Spectroscopy

Jim de Ruiter et al.

Summary: This study utilized time-resolved surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy to investigate the dynamic restructuring of oxide-derived copper electrodes and the adsorption of reaction intermediates. The results showed that CO2 could be activated to CO at low overpotentials, and the formation of CO intermediates decreased with prolonged application of low overpotentials. The researchers explained the low-overpotential CO2-to-CO activation mechanism based on the selective exposure of Cu(111) facets, partially oxidized surfaces, and the formation of copper-carbonate-hydroxide complex intermediates during the anodic pulses.

Effect of Electrolyte Composition and Concentration on Pulsed Potential Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Rileigh Casebolt et al.

Summary: The relationship between electrolyte concentration/composition and product distribution for pulsed potential electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO(2)R) differs from that of constant potential eCO(2)R. Pulsed potential eCO(2)R suppresses H-2 formation relative to CH4 due to periodic desorption of surface protons, while constant potential eCO(2)R favors H-2 production. Increasing KCl concentration during pulsed potential eCO(2)R greatly enhances C-2 product formation.
