Nanorod Photocatalysts for C-O Cross-Coupling Reactions

Kaituo Dong et al.

Summary: Carbon-heteroatom cross-coupling reactions are important for industrial chemical processes, especially for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and biologically active compounds. Photocatalyst/transition metal dual catalytic systems, using semiconductor nanoparticles as heterogeneous light sensitizers, offer advantages such as low-cost production, tunable photophysical properties, easy separation, high photostability, and recyclability. The combination of CdSe@CdS nanorod photocatalysts with a Ni complex catalyst enables efficient selective light-induced C-O cross-coupling reactions, achieving high yield and impressive turnover numbers.

Self-Supported Three-Dimensional Quantum Dot Aerogels as a Promising Photocatalyst for CO2 Reduction

Guocan Jiang et al.

Summary: The combination of two-dimensional and hexagonal semiconductor quantum dots with aerogels shows great potential for photocatalytic applications. However, traditional gelation methods have limitations due to oxidative treatments of quantum dots, which hinder their activity. In this study, a facile strategy using H2O as a dispersion solvent is presented to fabricate efficient quantum dot aerogels, providing a platform for designing advanced aerogel-based photocatalysts.

Quantum Dots Photocatalyze Intermolecular [2+2] Cycloadditions of Aromatic Alkenes Adsorbed to their Surfaces via van der Waals Interactions

Yishu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study successfully extended the scope of quantum dot photocatalyzed cycloaddition reactions to substrates without anchoring groups by introducing polyaromatic energy shuttle molecules on the quantum dot surface, achieving high yields. Compared to traditional catalyst Ir(ppy)(3), it offers the advantages of lower catalyst loading, higher stability, and reusability.

Antiradical Properties of trans-2-(4-substituted-styryl)-thiophene

Anamika Gusain et al.

Summary: Thiophene compounds with different substituents were synthesized and their radical scavenging properties were studied. Compounds with p-hydroxy and p-amino phenyl substitution showed strong radical scavenging activity, while compounds with NO2, CN, Cl substitution did not exhibit this property. Correlation between different substituents and compound properties was found through DFT and radical scavenging studies.

Visible Light Induced Reduction and Pinacol Coupling of Aldehydes and Ketones Catalyzed by Core/Shell Quantum Dots

Zi-Wei Xi et al.

Summary: An efficient visible light-driven methodology using CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots as photocatalysts selectively transforms aryl aldehydes and ketones to alcohols or pinacol products, with thiophenols acting as donors and hole traps. The catalysts show high efficiency and stability, with the ability to switch products simply by adjusting the amount of thiophenol. The method allows for good functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions, and is suitable for large scale reactions.

Temporal Changes in Interparticle Interactions Drive the Formation of Transiently Stable Nanoparticle Precipitates

Anish Rao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the ability to create transient self-assembled structures in gold nanoparticles through fine-tuned interparticle interactions on appropriately functionalized surfaces. Changes in pH and ionic strength lead to variations in electrostatic attraction between gold nanoparticles and the aggregating agent, triggering a simultaneous self-assembly response.

Direct, Site-Selective and Redox-Neutral α-C-H Bond Functionalization of Tetrahydrofurans via Quantum Dots Photocatalysis

Jia Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) were used to activate the alpha-C-H bond of tetrahydrofuran (THF) under redox-neutral conditions, enabling the synthesis of value-added chemicals without the need for stoichiometric oxidants or hydrogen atom transfer reagents. This scalable benchtop approach demonstrates the selective C(sp3)-H bond activation of THF using a QD photocatalyst, providing a versatile method for chemical transformations.
