Single-step conversion of ethanol into n-butene-rich olefins over metal catalysts supported on ZrO2-SiO2 mixed oxides

Vanessa Lebarbier Dagle et al.

Summary: This study reports on a Cu/ZrO2/SBA-16 catalyst with remarkable olefins selectivity and enhanced stability compared to the Ag/ZrO2/SBA-16 catalyst. Replacing Ag with Cu shifts the reaction pathway of crotonaldehyde hydrogenation, leading to the formation of butyraldehyde. Experimental and computational tools were used to verify the performance and stability advantage of the Cu/ZrO2/SBA-16 catalyst.

Reaction Mechanism of Pd-Catalyzed CO-Free Carbonylation Reaction Uncovered by In Situ Spectroscopy: The Formyl Mechanism

Robert Geitner et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes using different surrogate molecules was unraveled using in situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It was found that the reaction proceeds through the C-H activation of in situ generated methyl formate instead of carbon monoxide as previously hypothesized. A kinetic model involving all major intermediates was established based on quantitative NMR experiments for knowledge-driven optimization of the reaction. Additionally, a new reaction mechanism was proposed based on in situ observed Pd-hydride, Pd-formyl and Pd-acyl species.

Active sites and effects of co-adsorbed H2O on isolated methanol dehydrogenation over Pt/γ-Al2O3

Bryan J. Hare et al.

Summary: Dehydrogenation is the first step in the aqueous phase reforming mechanism of polyols, and this study investigates the reaction of methanol on Pt/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts using infrared spectroscopy. The results show that highly coordinated Pt metal sites are more active for methanol dehydrogenation, with larger Pt particles producing more CO at lower temperatures. Additionally, the co-adsorption of water does not affect methanol dehydrogenation on large Pt particles, but hinders the reaction on small Pt particles.

Formaldehyde Analysis in Non-Aqueous Methanol Solutions by Infrared Spectroscopy and Electrospray Ionization

Krishna K. Barakoti et al.

Summary: The study presents the quantitative analysis of formaldehyde in non-aqueous samples using anhydrous methanol as a case study. By utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and derivatization with dinitrophenylhydrazine, formaldehyde in various samples was successfully detected and quantified. The findings suggest that formaldehyde in methanol exists in equilibrium with methoxy methanol species, and does not exist in the aldehyde form as the main chemical species.
