Catalytic Transformation of PET and CO2 into High-Value Chemicals

Yinwen Li et al.

Summary: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and CO2, two chemical wastes that urgently need to be transformed in the environment, are simultaneously converted in a one-pot catalytic process through the synergistic coupling of three reactions. The chemical equilibria of both reactions are shifted forward, leading to significantly enhanced PET depolymerization. This synergistic catalytic process provides an effective way to simultaneously recycle two wastes and produce high-value chemicals.

Coupling Organic Synthesis and Hydrogen Evolution over Composite WO3/ZnIn2S4 Z-Scheme Photocatalyst

Yue-Hua Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the great potential of coupling photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with selective organic synthesis for sustainable production of value-added fuels and chemicals. The researchers construct one-dimensional/two-dimensional WO3/ZnIn2S4 hierarchical composites that exhibit superior photoactivity and selectivity compared to bare WO3 nanorods and ZIS nanosheets. The assembly of the Z-scheme heterostructure facilitates charge separation dynamics and tunes the energy band potentials to enhance the reduction and oxidation abilities of electrons and holes. The mechanism studies confirm the free radical mechanism of the photooxidation reaction and offer insights for the design of high-performance Z-scheme heterostructured catalysts.

Catalytic oxidation of polystyrene to aromatic oxygenates over a graphitic carbon nitride catalyst

Ruochen Cao et al.

Summary: The increasing manufacturing and the difficulty of plastic recycling have caused a significant amount of plastic waste. Current chemical recycling and upcycling methods have limitations including harsh conditions and poor selectivity. In this study, a photocatalytic method using heterogeneous graphitic carbon nitride catalysts is demonstrated to oxidize polystyrene into aromatic oxygenates under visible light. The dominant products are benzoic acid, acetophenone, and benzaldehyde when the polystyrene conversion exceeds 90% at 150 degrees C. The reaction mechanism involves the activation of polystyrene, followed by bond oxidation and further oxidation processes to form aromatic oxygenates. The development of materials capable of plastic recycling and upcycling is of great significance. The authors report a novel heterogeneous carbon nitride photocatalyst that efficiently converts polystyrene plastics into aromatic oxygenates, such as benzoic acid.
