Metal-Support Interactions in Metal/Oxide Catalysts and Oxide-Metal Interactions in Oxide/Metal Inverse Catalysts

Yangyang Li et al.

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews the progress on metal-support interactions (MSI) in metal/oxide catalysts and oxide-metal interactions (OMI) in oxide/metal inverse catalysts. It emphasizes the structure sensitivity of MSI and OMI, and introduces the concepts of electronic oxide-metal interactions (EOMI) and electronic oxide-metal strong interactions (EOMSI) in oxide/metal inverse catalysts. The article provides an overview of the background and nature of interfacial interactions between metals and oxides, reviews the MSI in metal/oxide catalysts with a focus on size and facet effects, and discusses the OMI in oxide/metal inverse catalysts with an emphasis on EOMI and EOMSI.

Dynamic interplay between metal nanoparticles and oxide support under redox conditions

H. Frey et al.

Summary: There are differences between reactive and nonreactive states, and the manifestations of metal-support interaction strongly depend on the chemical environment. The dynamics of nanoparticles and their migration depend on the orientation of the nanoparticles.

Pattern Formation in Catalytic H2 Oxidation on Rh: Zooming in by Correlative Microscopy

Johannes Zeininger et al.

Summary: In this study, spatial-temporal nonuniformities in H-2 oxidation on individual Rh(hkl) domains of a polycrystalline Rh foil were investigated using PEEM, XPEEM, and LEEM. The latter two techniques were used for in situ correlative microscopy, which provided higher lateral resolution and enabled the detection of island-mediated oxygen front propagation during kinetic transitions. The origin of this phenomenon was rationalized through model calculations based on a hybrid approach of microkinetic modeling and Monte Carlo simulations.

Reaction Modes on a Single Catalytic Particle: Nanoscale Imaging and Micro-Kinetic Modeling

Johannes Zeininger et al.

Summary: The kinetic behavior of Rh(hkl) nano facets coupled in a common reaction system was studied using field electron microscopy for in situ imaging of catalytic hydrogen oxidation. Different oscillating reaction modes were observed depending on the extent of interfacet coupling via hydrogen diffusion, including highly unusual multifrequential oscillations. The transitions between different modes were induced by variations in the particle temperature, causing local surface reconstructions.

Metal-Support Interactions in Metal/Oxide Catalysts and Oxide-Metal Interactions in Oxide/Metal Inverse Catalysts

Yangyang Li et al.

Summary: In this review, the metal-support interactions (MSI) in metal/oxide catalysts and the oxide-metal interactions (OMI) in oxide/metal inverse catalysts are comprehensively discussed. Electronic oxide-metal interactions (EOMI) and electronic oxide-metal strong interactions (EOMSI) in oxide/metal inverse catalysts are introduced as analogies to the concept of EMSI and SMSI in metal/oxide catalysts, emphasizing the structure sensitivity of MSI and OMI. Additionally, the effects of size and facet on the structure and electronic properties of metal/oxide catalysts are highlighted alongside a summary and outlook on the local nature and structure sensitivity of MSI and OMI.

How the anisotropy of surface oxide formation influences the transient activity of a surface reaction

P. Winkler et al.

Summary: Scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) and photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) techniques were used to study the high-Miller-index polycrystalline Rh surface structures, revealing the anisotropy of surface oxidation and its effect on catalytic hydrogen oxidation. The locally-resolved structure-sensitive surface oxide formation and comparison of reaction rates showed that Rh surface oxides exhibit high transient activity in hydrogen oxidation.

Mimicking industrial aging in fluid catalytic cracking: A correlative microscopy approach to unravel inter-particle heterogeneities

M. Gambino et al.

Summary: Using a correlative microscopy approach, this study investigated the spatial heterogeneities in artificially deactivated catalysts and compared the impact of metal contaminants on catalyst acidity and pore accessibility. The findings suggest that in addition to metal distribution, hydrothermal degradation also plays a role in dealumination and acidity drop in ECATs. Fe contamination must also be considered for its effect on matrix accessibility.

Coexisting multi-states in catalytic hydrogen oxidation on rhodium

P. Winkler et al.

Summary: The study reveals the coexistence of catalytically active steady state, catalytically inactive steady state, and multifrequential oscillating states on differently structured grains of a polycrystalline Rh foil during hydrogen oxidation. This observation raises interdisciplinary questions about how self-organizing dynamic processes in a heterogeneous system are influenced by the permeability of borders between adjacent regions.

Single-Particle Catalysis: Revealing Intraparticle Pacemakers in Catalytic H2 Oxidation on Rh

Johannes Zeininger et al.

Summary: Self-sustained oscillations in H-2 oxidation on a Rh nanotip were studied using in situ field emission microscopy, showing spatio-temporal oscillations resulting from the coupling of subsurface oxide formation/depletion with reaction front propagation. Tracking kinetic transition points allowed the identification of local pacemakers, specific surface atomic configurations crucial for reactivity. These insights into initiation and propagation of kinetic transitions on a single catalytic nanoparticle demonstrate the importance of interfacet communication in determining reactivity.
