Operando Structure-Activity-Stability Relationship of Iridium Oxides during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Rik Mom et al.

Summary: Creating active and stable electrodes is crucial for efficient and durable electrolyzers. This study investigates the factors determining the activity and catalyst dissolution in electrode structures. The researchers found that both surface and near-surface deprotonation play a significant role in the performance of the catalyst.

A comparative study of electrochemical cells for in situ x-ray spectroscopies in the soft and tender x-ray range

Juan-Jesus Velasco-Velez et al.

Summary: In situ x-ray spectroscopies are a powerful tool for studying the electronic structure of the electrode-electrolyte interface, but the design of spectro-electrochemical cells plays a crucial role in determining the measurements and processes that can be studied. It is important to choose the right cell design for the specific process of interest, and understanding the opportunities and limitations of different cell designs through case studies is essential for practical experiments.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Bimetallic NiFe Selenide Electrocatalysts with Multiple Phases for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yajie Guo et al.

Summary: Efficient and stable bimetallic NiFe selenide catalyst is synthesized for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction using NiFe Prussian blue metal-organic framework nanoparticle precursors. The catalyst shows low overpotential and accelerated electron-transfer kinetics, with negligible loss in electrocatalytic current density during long-term electrolysis, indicating good stability for efficient water oxidation.

Surface Electron-Hole Rich Species Active in the Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Juan-Jesus Velasco-Velez et al.

Summary: Iridium and ruthenium based anodes show low overpotentials and high corrosion resistance, making them ideal for the oxygen evolution reaction under harsh acidic conditions. Through advanced X-ray spectroscopy techniques, electrode nanofabrication, and DFT calculations, researchers revealed that the oxygen evolution reaction is controlled by the formation of empty Ir 5d states on the surface, while oxygen bound to three iridium centers remains dominant in the bulk. Furthermore, the study found that a high coverage of μ(1)-OO (peroxo) species during the OER is excluded, and a higher surface-to-bulk ratio in thinner electrodes enhances material usage.
