Transition state stabilization depends on solvent identity, pore size, and hydrophilicity for epoxidations in zeolites

Jun Zhi Tan et al.

Summary: Ti-silicates serve as catalysts for the epoxidation of alkenes with H2O2. The choice of solvent affects the stability of catalytically-relevant species and the turnover rates of the reaction. Ti-BEA shows higher turnover rates in CH3CN than in CH3OH, while the opposite trend is observed for Ti-MFI. Ti-silicates with higher silanol densities exhibit greater turnover rates in both solvents. The differences in turnover rates arise from the stabilization of reactive surface species by solvent mediated interactions.

Consequences of Intrapore Liquids on Reactivity, Selectivity, and Stability for Aldol Condensation Reactions on Anatase TiO2 Catalysts

Shashikant A. Kadam et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of non-polar liquids on acetone aldol condensation reactions on TiO2 surfaces. The results show that non-polar liquids enhance reaction rates and selectivity by stabilizing transition states for adsorption and desorption. Additionally, solvation by non-polar liquids prevents the formation of larger oligomers, leading to slower deactivation of the catalyst.

Effect of Interactions between Alkyl Chains and Solvent Structures on Lewis Acid Catalyzed Epoxidations

David S. Potts et al.

Summary: Solvent molecules within zeolite pores have a significant impact on the stability, rates, and selectivities of catalytic reactions. By studying alkene epoxidations in titanium-substituted BEA zeolites, researchers have discovered that the interactions between solvent molecules and active sites play a crucial role in these processes. The experimental and computational analysis of solvent composition within the zeolite pores provides insights into the thermodynamic consequences of these interactions and offers opportunities for controlling reaction selectivities and rates through the design of extended active site environments.

Identification and quantification of distinct active sites in Hf-Beta zeolites for transfer hydrogenation catalysis

Blake A. Johnson et al.

Summary: This study developed a new method using infrared spectroscopy to reliably quantify the existence of framework Lewis acidic Hf4+ sites in Beta zeolites. The method was successfully validated in Sn-Beta and Hf-Beta zeolites, providing crucial data support for further research on the activity of Lewis acidic zeolites.

In-Situ-Generated Active Hf-hydride in Zeolites for the Tandem N-Alkylation of Amines with Benzyl Alcohol

Sergio Rojas-Buzo et al.

Summary: Different silicates containing Lewis acid sites were studied for the tandem N-alkylation reaction of aniline with benzyl alcohol, with Hf-Beta and Zr-Beta showing the highest catalytic activity. The N-alkylation reaction was found to proceed through a hydrogen borrowing pathway, with in situ Hf-hydride species generated. Thermal treatment of the catalyst increased the amount of active species, and the Hf-Beta zeolite could be reused multiple times without significant deactivation.

Tailoring Distinct Reactive Environments in Lewis Acid Zeolites for Liquid Phase Catalysis

Blake A. Johnson et al.

Summary: Lewis acidic zeolites offer promise as catalysts for biomass-derived precursors due to their unique water tolerance and synthetic versatility. The multifaceted active site environment in zeolite catalysts is composed of primary binding sites, secondary pore structures, and occluded solvent and reactant molecules. Synthetic, spectroscopic, and kinetic methods are necessary for precise mechanistic interpretation of liquid-phase zeolite catalysis.
