Nanophotonic Materials for Twisted-Light Manipulation

Haoran Ren et al.

Summary: Twisted light, a helical spatial mode carrying orbital angular momentum, has great potential in optical and quantum information applications. However, current experiments are hindered by bulky, expensive, and slow-response optical elements. Nanophotonics offers a solution by providing compact and multifunctional devices for generating and detecting twisted light modes.

Chiral Generation of Hot Carriers for Polarization-Sensitive Plasmonic Photocatalysis

Yoel Negrin-Montecelo et al.

Summary: Mastering chirality at the nanoscale is important for scientists in various fields. Recently, researchers have proposed the use of chiral plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis to drive polarization-dependent photochemistry. In this study, inorganic nanometric chiral templates were used to assemble gold and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, leading to the formation of plasmon-based photocatalysts with polarization-dependent reactivity. This approach opens up new possibilities for applications in chirality and photocatalysis, particularly in plasmon-induced chiral photochemistry.

Gigantic vortical differential scattering as a monochromatic probe for multiscale chiral structures

Jincheng Ni et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an orbital-angular-momentum-assisted approach to generate chiroptical signals with monochromatic light, achieving a gigantic vortical differential scattering on intrinsically chiral microstructures fabricated by femtosecond laser. The VDS measurements can robustly generate chiroptical properties on microstructures with varying geometric features and detect chiral molecules with high sensitivity. This approach paves the way for efficiently chiroptical discrimination of multiscale chiral structures with photonic orbital angular momentum, simplifying and complementing conventional CD spectroscopy for measuring weak optical chirality on mesoscale chiral architectures and macromolecules.

Kelvin's chirality of optical beams

Sergey Nechayev et al.

Summary: Geometrical chirality describes the violation of three-dimensional mirror symmetry in objects with a nonvanishing spatial extent, while optical chirality only focuses on the local handedness of electromagnetic fields. This study introduces the physical significance of Kelvin's chirality in the spatial structure of optical beams and demonstrates its coupling to optical chirality in experiments involving structured light beams. The research highlights the importance of Kelvin's chirality in light-matter interactions with spatially inhomogeneous phase and polarization distributions.
