Recovery coupling in multilayer networks

Michael M. Danziger et al.

Summary: The increased complexity of infrastructure systems has resulted in critical interdependencies between multiple networks, where failures in one system can lead to a cascade of failures in other systems. The recovery process of a system often requires resources from other networks, causing documented interdependencies induced by the recovery process. Recovery coupling, capturing the dependence of the recovery of one system on the instantaneous functional state of another system, slows down the recovery process if the supporting networks are not functional.

The climatic interdependence of extreme-rainfall events around the globe

Zhen Su et al.

Summary: This study proposes a complex-network-based clustering workflow for identifying consistent synchronized structures of extreme-rainfall events (EREs) around the globe. By applying it to satellite-derived precipitation datasets, the study uncovers the primary compositions of different monsoon systems and the main intraseasonal variability in the context of the global monsoon. Furthermore, a case study verifies that the intraseasonal changes of upper-level atmospheric conditions are preserved within the global synchronization structure.

Impact of basic network motifs on the collective response to perturbations

Xiaoge Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of network motifs on the processes of perturbations propagation and network response dynamics. The results indicate that basic motifs along the propagation path jointly determine the proposed scaling regimes and provide a deeper understanding of the interplay of self-dynamics, interaction dynamics, and topological properties.

Dynamics on higher-order networks: a review

Soumen Majhi et al.

Summary: Higher-order networks, which allow links to connect more than two nodes, have emerged as a new frontier in network science and have led to important discoveries in various fields. This review focuses on the dynamics that arise on higher-order networks, covering different processes such as synchronization, contagion, cooperation, and consensus formation. The review also outlines future challenges and promising research directions.

Evolutionary dynamics of higher-order interactions in social networks

Unai Alvarez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study examines the evolutionary dynamics of a public goods game in social systems with higher-order interactions, providing a theoretical framework for studying cooperation in networked groups. The research also demonstrates how the presence of hubs and interactions in groups of different sizes influence the evolution of cooperation, and applies this framework to real-world collaboration data in science and technology to extract the synergy factor's dependence on group size. The work offers a way to boost cooperation in social groups through informed actions.

Universal Nonlinear Infection Kernel from Heterogeneous Exposure on Higher-Order Networks

Guillaume St-Onge et al.

Summary: This study found that combining heterogeneous exposure with the concept of minimal infective dose induces a universal nonlinear relationship between infected contacts and infection risk. Under nonlinear infection kernels, conventional epidemic wisdom breaks down with the emergence of discontinuous transitions, superexponential spread, and hysteresis.

Phase transitions and stability of dynamical processes on hypergraphs

Guilherme Ferraz de Arruda et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the lack of a theoretical framework to describe general dynamical processes on hypergraphs by deriving expressions for the stability of dynamical systems defined on hypergraphs. The study reveals the relevance of weighted graph-projection structures near fixed points and the potential to identify the roles of structural orders in given processes. Analytical solutions for social contagion and diffusion processes show that stability conditions can be separated into structural and dynamical components, with different roles played by pairwise interactions and interaction orders.

Homological percolation transitions in growing simplicial complexes

Y. Lee et al.

Summary: The simplicial complex representation is a mathematical framework for describing the high-order interaction effects of complex groups in various systems. The homological percolation transitions can be determined by the first and second Betti numbers. A minimal SC model with growth and preferential attachment factors successfully reproduces the HPTs in social coauthorship relationships.

Percolation on complex networks: Theory and application

Ming Li et al.

Summary: In the last two decades, network science has flourished and influenced various fields from the perspective of the heterogeneous interaction patterns of complex systems. The percolation model, as a paradigm for random and semi-random connectivity, plays a key role in the development of network science and its applications. Concepts and analytical methods related to percolation theory are employed to quantify and solve core problems of networks, while insights into percolation theory also facilitate understanding of networked systems.

Higher-order percolation processes on multiplex hypergraphs

Hanlin Sun et al.

Summary: This study establishes a general framework for assessing hypergraph robustness and characterizes the critical properties of simple and higher-order percolation processes. The research shows that the ensemble of multiplex hypergraphs can be mapped to an ensemble of multiplex bipartite networks under certain conditions. Additionally, it reveals the relationships between higher-order percolation processes, interdependent percolation of multiplex networks, and K-core percolation.

Unified treatment of synchronization patterns in generalized networks with higher-order, multilayer, and temporal interactions

Yuanzhao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study proposes a unified framework for investigating cluster synchronization patterns in generalized networks, demonstrating the existence of chimera states that emerge exclusively in the presence of higher-order interactions. This framework can be extended to other dynamical processes and facilitate the discovery of emergent phenomena in complex systems with generalized interactions.
