Determination of polyurethanes within microplastics in complex environmental samples by analytical pyrolysis

Irene Coralli et al.

Summary: Polyurethanes (PUR) are a group of polymers with numerous possible structures. This study aimed to analyze PUR in microplastic (MP) samples using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The use of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was found to improve the analytical results by reducing the interactions between pyrolytic MP analytes and the organic matrix of the samples.

Sources and fate of atmospheric microplastics revealed from inverse and dispersion modelling: From global emissions to deposition

Nikolaos Evangeliou et al.

Summary: We combined observations and inverse modeling to estimate global atmospheric emissions of microplastics and microfibers. The results show that agricultural regions and certain areas in the USA, Europe, and Asia are major deposition sites, while the transfer between microplastics and microfibers is limited.

30 years trends of microplastic pollution: Mass-quantitative analysis of archived mussel samples from the North and Baltic Seas

Maurits Halbach et al.

Summary: This study investigates the levels of microplastics (MP) in blue mussels from the North and Baltic Sea over a 30-year period. The research found that MP levels in North Sea samples gradually increased from the 1980s/90s to the 2000s, while MP levels in Baltic Sea samples remained consistently high and stable. The presence of different polymer clusters suggests regional and trans-regional sources of microplastic pollution.

Atmospheric microplastics in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean: Distribution, source, and deposition

Jinfeng Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in the marine air of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The results show that microplastics were abundant and diverse in shape and polymer type. The atmospheric microplastics were found to originate from both land and adjacent oceanic atmosphere, and their abundance and size varied with offshore distances. The findings highlight the importance of atmospheric microplastics as a source of marine microplastic pollution.

Plastic in the air?!-Spider webs as spatial and temporal mirror for microplastics including tire wear particles in urban air

Isabel Gossmann et al.

Summary: Studies on microplastic pollution in the air, specifically tire wear particles, are limited. Spider webs can serve as a cost-effective and accessible biomonitor for such pollution, providing insights into spatial and temporal trends. Analysis of spider web samples from a German city revealed the presence of tire wear particles and other microplastics, with variations in contamination levels potentially linked to sampling locations.

National archives' priorities: an international overview

Sara Martinez-Cardama et al.

Summary: The present priorities of national archives involve improving access to documents, conservation, digitization, protection of national heritage and collective memory, as well as enhancing the authority of the archives as governing institutions. Developing countries view national archives as crucial to cultural and intellectual life. Good practices in cultural institution transparency management are identified through describing the actions and methods employed by these institutions. The lack of strategic plans on national archives' websites is regrettable for it hinders international comparisons and future planning information for citizens.

Microplastic Mass Concentrations and Distribution in German Bight Waters by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Thermochemolysis Reveal Potential Impact of Marine Coatings: Do Ships Leave Skid Marks?

Christopher Dibke et al.

Summary: This study is the first large-scale survey of microplastics in the German Bight, revealing spatial, temporal, and potential source variations of microplastics in marine environments. The main source of microplastics is hypothesized to be marine (antifouling) coating particles from ships, rather than common packaging waste.

Constraining the atmospheric limb of the plastic cycle

Janice Brahney et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a significant issue in the 21st century, with recent research focusing on the transport of microplastics by the atmosphere. Studies suggest that atmospheric microplastics in the western United States primarily come from secondary reemission sources, highlighting the importance of understanding the sources and pathways of atmospheric plastic pollution.

Efficient transport of atmospheric microplastics onto the continent via the East Asian summer monsoon

Xiaohui Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the East Asian summer monsoon effectively transports atmospheric microplastics from Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia to southeastern China, with only some of the microplastics entering the marine ecosystem. During the East Asian summer monsoon season, the average abundance of atmospheric microplastics in the sampling area was 0.39 items/100 m3, with high variability among sampling sites.

Car and truck tire wear particles in complex environmental samples - A quantitative comparison with traditional microplastic polymer mass loads

Isabel Gossmann et al.

Summary: Tire wear particles are identified as a major source of environmental microplastics, posing a threat to the ecosystem. Results show that car tire wear dominates over truck tire wear in terms of mass loads, with significantly higher concentrations of tire wear particles compared to traditional microplastics.
