Correlation between plastic rearrangements and local structure in a cyclically driven glass

Saheli Mitra et al.

Summary: This study investigates the correlation between local structure and propensity for structural rearrangement in glass forming liquids and glasses. The results show that in a cyclic shear deformation, particles with higher S-2 and lower n(tet) are more likely to undergo rearrangement, regardless of the average energies of the configurations and strain amplitude. Distinctive local ordering is observed outside the shear band region, with the formation of icosahedral clusters.

Predicting plastic events and quantifying the local yield surface in 3D model glasses

Dihui Ruan et al.

Summary: By applying the local yield stress (LYS) method to probe local regions of three-dimensional computational glass models, high correlations were confirmed between the measured local yield stress (Delta tau(c)) and plastic events when the method was properly optimized. The optimal probing region was found to be around 5 sigma in radius, with the averaged correlation remaining positive through the first 200 identified plastic events or 1/3 of the yielding strain.

Correlation of plastic events with local structure in jammed packings across spatial dimensions

Sean A. Ridout et al.

Summary: In frictionless jammed packings, localized physics dominates in low dimensions, but loses relevance as dimensions increase. Using machine learning, this study finds that a local structural variable, softness, correlates with rearrangements in different dimensions, providing direct evidence that local structure plays an important role in higher dimensions.

Glass transition as a topological phase transition

M. G. Vasin

Summary: The glass transition is a phase transition in the system of topologically protected excitations in matter structure. The proposed model reproduces most of the characteristic thermodynamic and kinetic properties of glass transition, including the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law, the behavior of susceptibility and nonlinear susceptibilities, heat capacity behavior, and the appearance of a boson peak in the frequency dependence of the dynamic structure factor near the glass transition temperature.

Simple and Broadly Applicable Definition of Shear Transformation Zones

David Richard et al.

Summary: The study proposes a simple definition of shear transformation zones (STZs) based on the harmonic approximation of a glass's energy, which is shown to be more broadly applicable than previous anharmonic definitions. An open-source library is provided for analyzing low-lying STZs in computer glasses and laboratory materials. The results represent a methodological advancement towards characterizing mechanical disorder in glasses and understanding their yielding behavior.

Low-energy quasilocalized excitations in structural glasses

Edan Lerner et al.

Summary: Glassy solids exhibit a wide variety of thermomechanical properties, which are believed to be related to nonphononic, low-energy quasilocalized excitations (QLEs). Recent computer simulations have revealed the emergence of QLEs during vitrification upon cooling from a melt. Progress has been made in understanding the emergence of QLEs in structural glasses over the past three decades, but challenges still exist.

Plasticity in Amorphous Solids Is Mediated by Topological Defects in the Displacement Field

Matteo Baggioli et al.

Summary: This research reveals the existence of topological defects related to plastic instability in the nonaffine displacement field under deformation. The study of these defects uncovers new characteristics of plastic deformation in glasses and confirms the violation of Cauchy-Born rules and the impact of topological defects on plastic events.
