Stick-slip phenomena and Schallamach waves captured using reversible cohesive elements

Evelyne Ringoot et al.

Summary: Reversibility is crucial for accurate representation of surface peeling in various physical environments. Customized reversible cohesive elements in a hybrid finite element model can handle snap-through instabilities. The study investigates the connection between surface properties and stick-slip behavior, linking it to the propensity of the interface to localize deformation and damage.

Geometric control of sliding friction

W. Rinse Liefferink et al.

Summary: Controlling and predicting friction using designer macroscopic roughness is demonstrated. The roughness allows tuning the friction coefficient by more than an order of magnitude, explained completely by a simple Coulombic friction model. Dynamically controlling roughness enables on-the-fly friction control in a single system.

Elastohydrodynamic friction of robotic and human fingers on soft micropatterned substrates

Yunhu Peng et al.

Summary: The study examines the frictional sliding between patterned surfaces of soft materials based on elastohydrodynamic lubrication and establishes a scaling law governing the friction values. Experimental validation of the model shows its broad applicability for designing robotic hands or grippers, and encoding friction into haptic signals is significant for future advancements in soft material engineering.

From small wrinkles to Schallamach waves during rubber friction: In situ experiment and 3D simulation

Cui Zhibo et al.

Summary: Schallamach waves appear in friction process of rubber-like materials due to their small elastic modulus and relatively large surface adhesion energy. Research reveals that the waves propagate towards the centers of the contact regions in a spiral manner and the first wave forms on the sides of the contact region. The waves play a lubricating role in the contact interface during friction process.

Pinning-Induced Folding-Unfolding Asymmetry in Adhesive Creases

Michiel A. J. van Limbeek et al.

Summary: Soft elastic matter and biological tissue can crease under compression, with small scars remaining as nuclei for future creasing. Experiments with sticky polymer surfaces show that surface tension induces a second fold at the edge of self-contact, leading to unique elastic stress and crease morphologies. Contact line pinning inhibits complete unfolding and gives soft surfaces a folding memory, creating an intrinsic folding-unfolding asymmetry.

Fluid separation and network deformation in wetting of soft and swollen surfaces

Zhuoyun Cai et al.

Summary: The wetting behavior of soft polymer networks with increasing swelling degrees is studied, revealing a growing separation between the fluid and the network. With higher swelling degrees, more fluid separates from the network, showing synergy between network deformation and fluid separation. The presence of a swelling fluid plays a critical role in the wetting behavior of soft networks.
