Pyramidal tract neurons drive amplification of excitatory inputs to striatum through cholinergic interneurons

Nicolas A. Morgenstern et al.

Summary: This study reveals a previously unknown excitatory circuit in the brain, which conveys a delayed second phase of excitation to the striatum through a polysynaptic pathway involving PT neurons, cholinergic interneurons, and glutamate-releasing axons. This circuit mechanism may have important implications for behavior, plasticity, and learning.

Input-selective adenosine A1 receptor-mediated synaptic depression of excitatory transmission in dorsal striatum

Brandon M. Fritz et al.

Summary: The medial and lateral dorsal striatum play different roles in driving goal-directed and habitual/compulsive behaviors, respectively. Adenosine A(1) receptors in the dorsal striatum regulate excitatory glutamate transmission, potentially influencing striatally-mediated behaviors. The study found that activation of presynaptic A1Rs led to synaptic depression in both DLS and DMS, suggesting a potential role of A1Rs in neuropsychiatric diseases.
