Colloquium: Planckian dissipation in metals

Sean A. Hartnoll et al.

Summary: The appearance of the Planckian time TPl in conventional and unconventional metals is reviewed. The various different timescales that characterize metals, such as quasiparticle, transport, and many-body timescales, are discussed. The possibility of a Planckian bound on dissipation is explored from both a quasiparticle and a many-body perspective.

Planckian metal at a doping-induced quantum critical point

Philipp T. Dumitrescu et al.

Summary: We numerically investigate a model of interacting spin-1/2 electrons on a fully connected lattice with random exchange coupling. Our results reveal the existence of a quantum critical point that separates two distinct metallic phases as a function of doping. In this quantum critical point, the system exhibits non-Fermi-liquid properties, including T-linear Planckian behavior, ??/T scaling, and slow spin dynamics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev type.

Reduced Hall carrier density in the overdoped strange metal regime of cuprate superconductors

Carsten Putzke et al.

Summary: Study of the high-field Hall coefficient in thallium- and bismuth-based single-layer cuprates reveals a smooth evolution of this quantity from p to 1 + p over a wide doping range. The evolution of n(H) correlates with the emergence of the anomalous linear-in-temperature term in the low-temperature in-plane resistivity, suggesting that quasiparticle decoherence may extend to dopings well beyond the pseudogap regime.

Electrical conductivity in the Hubbard model: Orbital effects of magnetic field

J. Vucicevic et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the calculation of conductivity in the Hubbard model, focusing on orbital effects in the presence of a magnetic field. It presents the formalism and discussions on simplifications, proving the properties of the Kubo bubble in DMFT and showcasing DMFT results in various parameter regimes. Thorough analysis is also conducted on quantum oscillations of the conductivity, identifying a high-frequency component in line with recent experimental observations in moire systems.

Transport signatures of the pseudogap critical point in the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+δ

M. Lizaire et al.

Summary: This study measured five transport coefficients of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta cuprate superconductor in the normal state, revealing the universality of five signatures of the pseudogap phase and its critical point. The pseudogap phase at T = 0 behaves as a metal with fermionic excitations carrying heat and charge, and exhibits quantum criticality properties at low temperature.

Normal state specific heat in the cuprate superconductors La2-xSrxCuO4 and Bi2+ySr2-x-yLaxCuO6+δ near the critical point of the pseudogap phase

C. Girod et al.

Summary: The specific heat C of cuprate superconductors La2-xSrxCuO4 and Bi2+ySr2-x-yLaxCuO6+delta was measured near the critical doping p(star), showing that at lower dopings, C-e/T values are larger, indicating the presence of quantum criticality. Additionally, the electronic specific heat in these materials exhibits a logarithmic dependence on temperature, further supporting the existence of a pseudogap critical point.
