Summary: This article explores a molecular control method for the fibrous network topology and macroscopic properties of supramolecular hydrogels. By introducing the surface-catalyzed secondary nucleation process, a non-covalent strategy is utilized to induce physical cross-links and bundling of supramolecular fibers, thereby influencing the microstructure and mechanical properties of the gel networks.

Formation Mechanism of Flower-like Polyacrylonitrile Particles

Huaxin Gong et al.

Summary: The formation process of flower-like polyacrylonitrile particles has been investigated, and the mechanism behind it has been revealed. The petals within the particles consist predominantly of orthorhombic PAN crystals, and branching of the petals is a result of fast nucleation and growth of PAN on pre-existing crystals. The particles maintain a constant center-to-center distance due to strong electrostatic repulsion.

Macromolecular crowding and supersaturation protect hemodialysis patients from the onset of dialysis-related amyloidosis

Kichitaro Nakajima et al.

Summary: Amyloid fibrils of beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2m) can cause dialysis-related amyloidosis. Decrease in serum albumin levels in long-term dialysis deteriorates the inhibitory effects of serum milieux on supersaturation-limited amyloid formation of beta 2m, suggesting that macromolecular crowding protects the onset of amyloidosis.

Nicholas A. Sather et al.

Summary: Liquid crystalline hydrogels can be 3D printed from aqueous supramolecular polymer inks, with pH and salt concentration influencing intermolecular interactions and ink viscosity. Enhanced hierarchical interactions in high viscosity inks lead to greater nanoscale alignment, enabling the creation of materials with anisotropic properties and scaffolds that promote cell alignment.

Molecular crystallization directed by polymer size and overlap under dilute and crowded macromolecular conditions

Yuuki Hata et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that dissolved polymers can control caffeine crystal formation in both dilute and crowded solutions. Larger poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) accelerate crystal formation in dilute solutions due to depletion attraction, while in semidilute solutions, crystal formation rate is unaffected by PEG molecular weight. These findings can be useful in developing strategies for controlling molecular self-assembly in crowded intracellular environments.

Stereoselective Primary and Secondary Nucleation Events in Multicomponent Seeded Supramolecular Polymerization

Souvik Sarkar et al.

Summary: Bioinspired, kinetically controlled seeded growth has been shown to provide length, dispersity, and sequence control on the primary structure of dynamic supramolecular polymers. However, command over the molecular organization at all hierarchical levels for the modulation of higher order structures of supramolecular polymers remains challenging. Surface-catalyzed secondary nucleation process offers exciting possibilities for topology control in synthetic macromolecular systems, but mechanistic insights into the molecular determinants and driving forces for the secondary nucleation event in synthetic systems are lacking. The study attempts to fill this gap by demonstrating molecular chirality control on primary and secondary nucleation events in seed-induced supramolecular polymerization, with kinetic experiments providing insights into the nucleation processes.

Tuning energy landscapes and metal-metal interactions in supramolecular polymers regulated by coordination geometry

Nils Baeumer et al.

Summary: In this study, coordination geometry was used as a new tool to regulate non-covalent interactions, photophysical properties, and energy landscape of supramolecular polymers. By designing two self-assembled Pt(ii) complexes with different coordination and molecular geometry, it was possible to achieve fine control of PtPt distances and tunable luminescent properties. This highlights the importance of coordination geometry in the development of functional supramolecular materials.
