Variation in cis-regulation of a NAC transcription factor contributes to tolerance in wheat

Hude Mao et al.

Summary: Drought is a major limitation to wheat production worldwide, and understanding the genetic components determining drought tolerance is crucial for wheat breeding. In this study, we identified a wheat NAC gene (TaNAC071-A) that is strongly associated with drought tolerance. Overexpression of TaNAC071-A improved drought tolerance in wheat through increased expression of stress-responsive genes and improved water-use efficiency. We also found that a 108-bp insertion in the promoter region of TaNAC071-A contributes to variation in drought tolerance among wheat accessions. Importantly, introgression of this insertion allele into drought-sensitive cultivars improved their drought tolerance, making it a valuable genetic resource for wheat breeding.

Coordination of plant growth and abiotic stress responses by tryptophan synthase β subunit 1 through modulation of tryptophan and ABA homeostasis in Arabidopsis

Wen-Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: To adapt to changing environments, plants have evolved regulatory mechanisms that balance their growth and stress responses. This study reveals the involvement of tryptophan synthase beta subunit 1 (TSB1) in coordinating the growth hormone auxin and the stress hormone abscisic acid (ABA), thereby affecting plant growth and abiotic stress responses. TSB1 serves as a key coordinator by balancing Trp and ABA homeostasis.

OsABT, a Rice WD40 Domain-Containing Protein, Is Involved in Abiotic Stress Tolerance

Eryong chen et al.

Summary: Plant growth and crop productivity are greatly influenced by abiotic stress. WD40 repeat-containing proteins are crucial for the development and environmental adaptation of eukaryotes. The study cloned a stress response gene, OsABT, from rice and found that it plays a positive role in response to salt stress and a negative role in response to drought stress in Arabidopsis. OsABT enhances tolerance to ABA and salt stress during plant seedling development.

Ca2+ sensor-mediated ROS scavenging suppresses rice immunity and is exploited by a fungal effector

Mingjun Gao et al.

Summary: The discovery of a conserved immune suppression network in cereals centered on the Ca2+-sensor ROD1 is significant in understanding how plants fine-tune immune homeostasis. ROD1 promotes reactive oxygen species scavenging and its disruption confers resistance to multiple pathogens. The fungal effector AvrPiz-t structurally mimics ROD1 to suppress host immunity and promote virulence, revealing a molecular framework for breeding disease-resistant, high-yield crops.

Maize SRO1e represses anthocyanin synthesis through regulating the MBW complex in response to abiotic stress

Lumin Qin et al.

Summary: Plants under abiotic stress produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), countered by anthocyanins, which can be detrimental if over-accumulated. The SRO1e gene in maize plays a role in regulating the plant's response to abiotic stress by interfering with anthocyanin synthesis to maintain ROS homeostasis.
