Differential V2-directed antibody responses in non-human primates infected with SHIVs or immunized with diverse HIV vaccines

Svenja Weiss et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrate that an HIV vaccine targeting the V1V2 region of gp120 is superior to whole envelope vaccines or natural infection in inducing V1V2 antibodies with anti-viral functions that correlate with protection.

Reappraising the Value of HIV-1 Vaccine Correlates of Protection Analyses

P. J. Klasse et al.

Summary: The failure of HIV-1 vaccines is attributed to the lack of consistent correlates of protection (CoPs), while neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) have been identified as the principal CoP for successful vaccines against other viruses, including SARS-CoV-2.

A clade C HIV-1 vaccine protects against heterologous SHIV infection by modulating IgG glycosylation and T helper response in macaques

Anusmita Sahoo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the clade C MVA/CycP-gp120 vaccine provides heterologous protection against a tier2 SHIV rectal challenge by inducing a polyfunctional antibody response, cytotoxic CD8 T cell response, and CCR5-negative T helper response in the rectum.

A clade C HIV-1 vaccine protects against heterologous SHIV infection by modulating IgG glycosylation and T helper response in macaques

Anusmita Sahoo et al.

Summary: The developed clade C HIV-1 vaccine provided heterologous protection against a tier 2 SHIV rectal challenge in rhesus macaques. The vaccine induced strong envelope-specific IgG response and polyfunctional CD8 T cell response via two routes of vaccination, as well as a low level CCR5-negative T helper response in the rectum.

Oral Vaccination Approaches for Anti-SHIV Immunity

Erandi Velarde de la Cruz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated a SHIV mucosal immunization in Rhesus macaques, showing that SHIVBG505-OPV immunization stimulated more significant systemic cell-mediated responses, but antibody responses were disappointing. There were no significant differences in post-infection viral loads between groups post-challenge, but the vaccinated groups had more significant preservation of Th17 CD4+ T cells in both blood and rectal mucosa.
