Interacting plexcitons for designed ultrafast optical nonlinearity in a monolayer semiconductor

Yuxiang Tang et al.

Summary: Searching for ideal materials with strong effective optical nonlinear responses is a long-term task in contemporary quantum and nonlinear optics. This study explores plasmon-exciton polaritons (plexcitons) in a hybrid system composed of silver nanodisk arrays and monolayer tungsten-disulfide, which exhibit giant room-temperature nonlinearity. These plexcitons can be utilized to manipulate the ultrafast nonlinear absorption properties of the solid-state system, opening up new avenues for practical applications such as energy-efficient ultrafast all-optical switching and information processing.

Tuning of the Berry curvature in 2D perovskite polaritons

Laura Polimeno et al.

Summary: By engineering the energy dispersion of polaritons in a strongly coupled organic-inorganic two-dimensional perovskite single-crystal microcavity, different Berry curvature distributions of polariton bands can be obtained. External magnetic field breaks time-reversal symmetry, leading to exciton Zeeman splitting and lifting the degeneracy of Hamilton diabolical points. This results in bands with non-zero integral Berry curvatures, which can be modified by tuning external parameters like temperature, magnetic field, and sample thickness.

Van der Waals heterostructure polaritons with moire-induced nonlinearity

Long Zhang et al.

Summary: Controlling matter-light interactions with cavities is crucial in modern science and technology. By integrating MoSe2-WS2 heterobilayers in a microcavity, cooperative coupling between moire-lattice excitons and microcavity photons has been established, providing versatile control of both matter and light. This moire polariton system combines strong nonlinearity and microscopic-scale tuning of matter excitations, offering a platform to study collective phenomena from tunable arrays of quantum emitters.

Spatial coherence of room-temperature monolayer WSe2 exciton-polaritons in a trap

Hangyong Shan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a strong light-matter coupling regime between microcavity photons and excitons in an atomically thin WSe2. Coherence buildup is accompanied by a threshold-like behavior in the emitted light intensity, characteristic of a polariton laser effect. Valley physics is also evident in the manipulation of polaritons via the valley-Zeeman effect in the presence of an external magnetic field.

All-optical switching based on interacting exciton polaritons in self-assembled perovskite microwires

Jiangang Feng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates all-optical switching using propagating and strongly interacting exciton-polariton fluids in self-assembled CsPbBr3 microwires. Strong polariton-polariton interactions and extended polariton fluids with a propagation length of around 25 μm have been achieved, allowing for all-optical switching on/off of polariton propagation in picosecond time scale. The scalable self-assembly method highlights promising applications of solution-processed perovskites in integrated photonics operating in strong coupling regime.

Ultralow Threshold Polariton Condensate in a Monolayer Semiconductor Microcavity at Room Temperature

Jiaxin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reports the realization of polariton lasing in a TMD microcavity at room temperature for the first time, showing evidence of continuous wave pumped polariton lasing through macroscopic occupation of the ground state, emergence of temporal coherence, presence of an exciton fraction-controlled threshold, and buildup of linear polarization. This work represents a critical step towards utilizing nonlinear polariton-polariton interactions and providing a new platform for thresholdless lasing.
