Students' intentions to practice primary care are associated with their motives to become doctors: a longitudinal study

Summary: Medical schools can address the shortage of primary care physicians by influencing students' career preferences. This study found that career intentions mainly change during clinical training and are influenced by students' motives. Therefore, strategies such as reinforcing students' altruistic values and increasing the academic recognition of primary care can be implemented to increase the attractiveness of this career.
