Gut Microbiota and Metabolome Changes in Three Pulmonary Hypertension Rat Models

Lingjie Luo et al.

Summary: Dysbiosis of gut microbiota and metabolites is found in pulmonary hypertension patients and rodent models. The exact changes in gut microbiota during the development of pulmonary hypertension remain unclear, as does the function of gut microbiota. This study demonstrated disrupted gut microbiota in rats with various induced forms of pulmonary hypertension, and showed dynamic changes in the gut microbiota during disease progression. Specific plasma biomarkers and a disease-associated network linking Streptococcus with pulmonary hypertension-associated metabolites were identified.

Impact of prehabilitation during neoadjuvant chemotherapy and interval cytoreductive surgery on ovarian cancer patients: a pilot study

Ester Miralpeix et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of a prehabilitation program during neoadjuvant treatment and interval cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer patients. The results showed that the prehabilitation group had higher mean total protein levels and lower rate of intraoperative complications and blood transfusion requirement compared to the control group. However, there were no significant differences between the groups in terms of the day of the first ambulation, rate of postoperative complications, and length of hospital stay.

Dual contribution of the gut microbiome to immunotherapy efficacy and toxicity: supportive care implications and recommendations

Hannah R. Wardill et al.

Summary: The composition of the gut microbiome is increasingly recognized to be linked to the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. However, efforts to enhance immunotherapy efficacy must also consider the risk of immune-related adverse events. Strategies at various research phases are needed to ensure the impact of augmenting immunotherapy efficacy is approached in a manner that considers adverse implications.

Mitigating acute chemotherapy-associated adverse events in patients with cancer

Nicole M. Kuderer et al.

Summary: Despite the rise of novel targeted agents and immunotherapies, chemotherapy remains the primary treatment for most human malignancies. However, chemotherapy-associated adverse events (CAAEs) have a significant impact on patients' physical, emotional, and social well-being. Efforts to identify and summarize management approaches for CAAEs are currently limited. This review focuses on the most common acute CAAEs that affect survival, quality of life, function, and continuation of optimal therapy, providing insights into their underlying causes, evidence-based treatments, prevention strategies, and management recommendations.

Clinical Impact of Cachexia in Head and Neck Cancer Patients Who Received Chemoradiotherapy

Naomi Hayashi et al.

Summary: In head and neck cancer patients, cancer cachexia is negatively associated with prognosis, and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) can be used as an evaluation index. Cachexia in definitive treatment has a negative impact on overall survival, while it is not significant in adjuvant treatment.

Antibiotic-induced disruption of the microbiome exacerbates chemotherapy-induced diarrhoea and can be mitigated with autologous faecal microbiota transplantation

Hannah R. Wardill et al.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of the gut microbiome on gastrointestinal toxicity induced by chemotherapy, providing a clear rationale for targeting the microbiome to mitigate complications. Stabilizing and strengthening the gut microbiome before chemotherapy may help avoid secondary consequences of gastrointestinal toxicity.

Docosahexaenoic Acid Suppresses Expression of Adipogenic Tetranectin through Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein and Forkhead Box O Protein in Pigs

Jui-Ting Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that DHA negatively regulates the adipogenic TN in both pigs in vivo and in humans/pigs in vitro, potentially through SREBP-1c or FoxO. This down-regulation of TN associated with fibrinolysis and adipogenesis could contribute to the beneficial effects of DHA on alleviating obesity-induced metabolic syndromes.

A. R. da Silva Ferreira et al.

Summary: A chemotherapeutic-induced model of mucositis using 3D intestinal organoids was developed, showing that methotrexate caused organoid damage that could be salvaged by folinic acid treatment. Prophylactic treatment with butyrate might be a valuable strategy for mucositis prevention.

Impact of post-diagnosis weight change on survival outcomes in Black and White breast cancer patients

Lihua Shang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated weight change patterns and survival outcomes in Black and White breast cancer patients. The results showed that BMI loss is a strong predictor of worse breast cancer outcomes, while BMI gain is also associated with poorer survival, although to a lesser extent. The study emphasizes the importance of monitoring weight changes post-diagnosis for improved survival in breast cancer patients.
